I'm running Norton System Works 2002. Yesterday I was prompted to run Live Update and ever since my browser has been running painfully slow. I'm using the default security setting (medium) but I have also tried the other settings to no avail. I looked in Symantec's knowledge base but couldn't find anything that actually helps. I also tried the online trouble shooting option to detect any problems with the software. The reply to this was, "You are running software that is no longer supported", right next to the UPGRADE NOW button. That wouldn't be such a kick in the nads except I just recently purchased an additional one year subscription instead of upgrading, which I would have had my computer been newer. Almost seems like they are trying to force consumers to buy the latest version of their software. Anyone else run into similar problems with Norton? Any advice on rectifying the problem?

Back in the good ol' DOS days (yeh, right, LOL) I swore by Norton. these days, I don't have much good to say. I personally don't run any software firewall anymore. I have a router with stateful packet inspection. I have two computers that are always on, and have never had a problem with machines running XP. With Win98SE, the kids' machine was always getting loaded up with spyware. Transitioning to a newer machine and XP seems to have solved that.

I have found that Norton firewall caused me problems too, I don't use that firewall at all, I use the free Zone alarm and have for years, it works great. Also if you upgraded your 2002 to 2004 system works I have heard nothing but bad things and many people returning to 2003. I would disable the firewall and go to www.zonelabs.com and download the free firewall and try that....

Thanks. Maybe I'll give Zone Alarm a try. Can't afford a hardware firewall right now.

Being a saver of the pennies (it all helps to gain my first 'L' lens) I've bin with Zone Alarm for a while, and back this up with the free version of AVG (Anti Virus software), its ok and will find most virii but won't always cure them. I've found the Stinger from McAfee will cure the virii most times (a great little app to run).

Just came in and saw this thread. My PC had "virus-like" behavior last week and I spent three days trying to fix it. It was a Norton Live Update that that didn't play well with my set-up and I had to strip it from my system. I went and got Norton 2004 (after a lot of research, couldn't find anything better) and it has actually improved my PC's performance. It is Systemworks 2004, but no firewall. I just have the XP useless one. But I can assure you, after another set of issues I had last year with Norton, they have NO customer service and FORGET getting compensation for your already paid subscription. I have gone down that road and after much aggravation, I walked away. Maybe you will fare better. I think I'll look into this Zone ALarm; I have heard good things about it. But you do need virus also IMHO, and the 2004 appears to be fine there.
