Can't say as I am surprised, it is currently a little higher than I would have expected, as I couldn't really pull off what I was trying to do. Funny thing though, my wife said she thought the picture would have looked better with a different crop, and she is so right. Probably would be a 6 if I consulted her before posting (don't tell her I said that).

I haven't checked my score all day, but my first 3 votes were 7's now I'm nowhere near that, the thing is mine clearly meets the challenge, so I have no idea what people are voting on, since this was possibly one of the worst challenges I've seen for a while.

It can be puzzling can't it when people vote very low on well produced images that meet the challenge.

i really enjoy mixing it up

Yes mine meets the challenge, but it's rubbish :)

Meeting the challenge is often overlooked for some reason, though I cannot understand why. As an example, my entry for Black and White V was very clearly in Black and White. Met the challenge! Yet scored below the 50% mark. I suppose if all the other shots are also in Black and White, then someone has to be below average, yes?

All that said, my Warmth shot is far exceeding expectations. And I cannot understand why that is so either! Truly confusing, this place. Ha!

True.
I am at 4.7 after 38 votes and 2 very nice comments. (my guess was 5.2 if I were to guess)

so the top five were all in the northern hemisphere where it's cold, lol, so much for us downunder where it really is warm!

Actually, as far as I can tell you're the first finisher from the antipodes. Although Singapore is pretty close :-)

goes to show you the challenge theme didn't matter, or my photo was just rubbish!

I don't see how you can figure that, Anita. All of the top 5 communicate very well a sense of "warmth in a cold place" which is very much within the challenge theme. At least as I see it, and as many others did. Your shot, on the other hand, while it certainly was SHOT in a warm place, doesn't particularly communicate "warmth" to the viewer. More "exuberance" and "youth", I'd say...

I guess when I read the theme I got it all wrong, everyone interprets themes differently and because I spend a lot of time at the beach these days, I figured it fit, but I suppose your'e right, at the end of the day people voted with their heart.

Hey, at least you didn't get any votes of 1-3, no one voted it down. Eight of the top ten images didn't fare so well and received votes in that range.

[edit for spelling]

I guess people just didn't like yours or thought it was DNMC.

Sure, I was one of them, but 8 out of the top 10... Perhaps a polarising image is a better bet than one that tries to take a 'please everyone' approach? Funny, since I've read many times on DPC that the secret to scoring well is to avoid low marks. That was true for the Blue, but I'd have expected to see that to be true for more than 2 of the top 10 of the challenge. I think it shows that you did something right with your image that you avoided any low marks, so I don't think you should assume your thinking was out of kilter with the voters.

I'm not sure we should be pointing specifically to the images of others in our discussion, but sure there were some images that were deliberately ironic. I think voters enjoyed that too.
