Best defense in 35 years ?

No. Not really. Not even close to possibly maybe.

Seahawk defense is good. You want the best in the last few decades? they are not even in the conversation. In no way could they stack up against units like the Pittsburgh Steelers ΓΆ€“ 1976,Chicago Bears ΓΆ€“ 1985,New Orleans Saints- 1987, San Francisco 49ers-1988 ,New York Giants ΓΆ€“ 1990,Philadelphia Eagles -1991,Dalls Cowboys- 1994,Baltimore Ravens ΓΆ€“ 2000,Tampa Bay Buccaneers ΓΆ€“ 2002.

Any of those defenses are vastly better. In fact this year the Seahawks are 6th in the league in team defense by YPG behind
1. Carolina Panthers 213.0
2. Indianapolis Colts 271.0
3. Pittsburgh Steelers 299.0
4. Detroit Lions 315.0
5. Green Bay Packers 315.0
6. Seattle Seahawks 362.0

Heck they won't even be the best defense in their next game.

hah, well you're certainly entitled to your opinion, a lot of people who know a lot more about football than you do would disagree. Anyone can take just one stat and make their argument with it.

I think to be fair to Brennan you should say that the people who consider the Seattle defense to be among the best of all time, they are talking about their defense over the last three years put together. After all, this year they clearly weren't "the best" because they weren't as good as they were last year. The football people I tend to pay attention to are over at Football Outsiders and I think they have their three year run as the sixth best three year run of all time. That's pretty good. Best of all time was the Purple People Eaters of Minnesota from 69-71.

I hate to say it, but I lost faith and left the tv to take my kids out on a walk. Then my phone started going crazy and we headed back after hearing an eruption of cheering at a stoplight. I got to watch it on TIVO which was probably better for my poor little heart. I wouldn't have been able to take it.

OTOH, Brennan is quite wrong that they won't be the best defense next game. The Seahawks led the league in DVOA (Football outsiders' advanced metric) with a weighted rating of -19.8% which basically means they played 20% better than an average defense. The Patriots were #12 with a weighted rating of -6.2%.

Seattle was third in pass defense and second in rushing defense while New England was twelfth and fourteenth.

One more post to say I have my all time numbers wrong. Here is the article. They are 18th all time and fifth in the last 25 years. (That is, their three year accumulated resume.)

Seattle's strength isn't their defense, its the fact that they play with incredible intensity, every play. Many teams have a hard time matching it, Denver surely couldn't last year. I think the Patriots will be ready, i'm hoping for a great game to watch.
