I use MS Digital Image Pro 9 as my primary editor, although I am still learning many of its uses. It has been suggested to me here several times that I need to lower my compression setting when I am doing my down-size for submission to a challenge. I can't find anything like this in Image Pro, although it does mimic most of the other PS functions. Can anyone offer me any guidance on this one? Thank you!

Is there a Save for Web feature?

Yes, but it doesn't keep the compression from going down to about half of what is allowed here. And there's no "settting" for compression separately.

I've been checking Suite manual(pdf file-278pages).
Remember to play around with a Copy only. Check out page 29/30.

You are always so helpful, Faidoi. Thank you. Unfortunately, that is exactly what I've been working with. I go in and change a diminsion to 640 max for a length or width, then keep 72 dpi and let the dimension re-set. There's no "compression" setting per se. Is there something I am missing with what I can do with the three options I have in that dialog box, do you think?

Only thing left might be to crop down closer to only include important compositional elements, but your pictures seem find to me.

In DIP9
From the Tools drop down menu
Choose Options...
Under Picture Options:
-> Resolution and Compression settings...
Is that the compression you are looking for?

I wish I were at home . . . I don't have DIP9 here. Is the one you're referring to a global setting or specifically directed to resizing (down)?

I have DIP 7 and it seems to work the same as DIP 9. I think you'll have to use save as rather than save special so you can control the amount of compression.
When using save as select jpeg then click options. There you can select the final size of the image as well as the amount of compression. You'll have to use a bit of trial and error to get the file size under 150k. A compression setting of between 5 and 7 should work (1 is the least, 100 is the most).
Hope this helps.

It's the global one, setting for your default ppi (600-72) and default compression (I have it set to none). In looking at this again this is for a new picture probably has no effect on saving of an already jpeged picture.
But I am still looking 4 ya.
You may be looking for the Save As... Compression.
When you want to Save your Pic, Choose Save As...
If you are saving as a JPG, you will have an Options... button to the left of the save button.
When you click the Options... button you can:
Choose the Color depth: (true color)
Compression type: (always jpeg)
Quality Level (This is where you use the slider to choose what % for compression, probably the one they are talking about.)
You can also choose to not have thumb stored in picture here. |

Thanks, Cpanaioti! I think that is probably what I'm looking for! Can't wait to try it out tonight and see if it makes a difference. I feel like I need to learn PS, but for now, DIP9 is more than I can fully utilize! Thnaks for everyone's help.

More great info. Thanks, awpollard! There is so much I have to learn; glad that there are folks here to help every now and then! Let me know if you have any more gems in working with DIP 9. Most people here only use PS, which doesn't always apply to me.

DIP9 is fine...I'll sit down and do some tutorials on some really fun things to do with it when I get a chance. |

I have seen that; what does that actually refer to?
Sorry if that is a really dumb question . . .

This is for preview purposes. I don't think it's needed especially if your using windows xp since xp creates a thumbnail db on its own.
Here's what the DIP help says:
To store a thumbnail view of your picture used for previewing your picture, select the Store thumbnail in file check box.

Yes, true. I really only use DIP to post-edit. All my viewing and cataloging is through ACDSee. Thumbnails are present from XP and ACDSee. Just wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something I should know about.
