From the Deep South, but now living in Greater Appalachia. Would love to check out the Left Coast.

Edited because my map reading skills are somewhat limited. :-)

hm, well "america" is two continents, not one nation. look up "america" in any list of nations and you don't find it - try under "U" ... so I guess any country from canada down to argentina works for me. like any empire, hubris is always part of the downfall.

That's interesting: I just realized Southern California roots make me part of El Norte, not the Left Coast.... Who knew?

I'm a little south of the "Deep South", off the edge into the swamp.
It seems that I've always been a little over the edge anyway.

Lived in all of them except New France.

Currently in Greater Appalachia. Born and raised on the left coast. There I was a conservative. Here I am a raging liberal.

Live in tidewater. Hurricane 30 miles south of me right now. I've ridden out a dozen in my lifetime. This one is pretty weak and small at 100mph sustained. But.... lights a flickering right now. Will I finish this post? LOL I can even speak in a Harkers Island brogue. Hoi toiders unite against all of yankeydom! Darn carpetbaggers and dingbatters! :)

I am thinking that yankeedom is too big,(my area of CT would seem much closer in thought and mind to somewhere in New York, New Jersey, etc than Minnesota, ie. makes no sense) and new netherland is too small. have to draw a line somewhere I guess...

sadly USA people call themselves americans - hubris and ignorance fuels such a total misnomer. look up "america" on the list of nations - does not exist. try under "U" - 2 continents and we decide to bag the term "america" ... as to that book: it calls out the obvious - there is nothing "united" about the united states. and poor canada and mexico have to put up with our empire and our misuse of the term america. a better read would be Howard Zinn's "The Peoples History of the United States."

thanks for posting this.

anyone read it? I'm almost done, and I feel like I finally understand American politics.

I'm from New Netherland.

The 11 Nations are:

Deep South
The Far West
First Nation
Greater Appalachia
The Left Coast
The Midlands
New France
New Netherland
El Norte
Tidewater
Yankeedom

Here's a map:

Apparently I grew up in Canadian Yankeedom and transplanted to Canadian "The Midlands", which is funny, because I thought I grew up in Canadian Redneckville and transplanted to Canadian "Normal People Area"

Grew up in the "Far West", spent four and a half years in the south-and-western-most part of "El Norte" this side of the border, now residing in "Greater Appalachia."

Sounds like an interesting book, I might have to see if the library has it.

I took a quick look at this thread and my immediate impression was that someone conveniently forgot to consider that well before the advent of the white man there were peoples that inhabited this part of the world, who contrary to what some believe were not lost and did not need to be discovered.

Sadly, we seem to forget about the native peoplels described in the book called 500 Nations: An Illustrated History of North American Indians, by Alvin M. Josephy Jr.

I have not yet acquired the book mentioned by the OP yet, but I might.

They are definitely considered in the book, and make the 11 as "First Nation"
