Halloween History (NASA Image of the Day)
Originally posted by Linked Page:

The last day of October—Halloween—is a popular holiday in North America and some parts of Europe. In Ireland, people celebrate with bonfires and fireworks. In the United States, children put on costumes and head out for a night of begging candy from neighbors. In Mexico, the day inspires introspection about the deceased.

Where did the idea for Halloween come from and when did people start celebrating it? A festival with a long history, Halloween has gone through several transformations, absorbing traditions and excluding others depending on the social norms and popular fads of the time. Modern Halloween is largely a mashup of ideas and rituals associated with an ancient Celtic New Year̢۪s festival, the Catholic-inspired All Saint̢۪s Day and All Souls̢۪ Day, and the Protestant Guy Fawkes Day.

Short to the point comment that truly is spot on.

Considering the lack of participation on my part in any of the events on this site I am seriously considering taking a permanent break.

That would be sad. We all go through ebbs and flows with regard to participating on this site. No need to make it a permanent anything.

I've been taking a break for a couple of months, Ray.
But when my membership came up for renewal,
it was easy to hit the "renew" button.

I hope you will, after thinking about it, feel the same way.

This is what happens when the challenge is geared only to the part of the user base (US in this case).

Feast V · Advanced Editing
Snap a fancy photograph of your Thanksgiving Feast. Or... [more]
6 days and 20 hours left. 31 entries awaiting your vote Begin voting

That's 32 including my entry. That's lower than Camouflage II (which was a difficult challenge, at least to me) and Balloon III (which was in the middle of the summer). Lowest open challenge turnout since i'm actively participating (Foreground Bokeh III in February).

I didn't feel like interrupting our holiday dinner so I didn't enter. Happy wife, happy life! :-D

Thanks Mike - it would be great if you can comment too and let us know where we are going wrong apart from the obvious lack of processing:)

if you want i'll comment on your entry after the challenge is over. it wasn't the lack of processing, it was that most entries were uninteresting. they were boring shots of food with no real thought put into making them appealing to the voter.

not all, but most were. a few 7,8,9 brought the average up :)

i'll say this, if your picture includes a person. have them look at the camera, please... if they are looking off camera or talking to someone else i have no emotional interest in them or even care that you took a picture of them.

if your shots is of food, please present it composed in an interesting way, make me want to eat it.

Just finished voting. Of my top rated shots, only two involved Thanksgiving images. Anything edible can be a "feast"--even spaghetti and a salad if it is presented and photographed well.

@ damjanev- just be thankful these are considerably global in appreciation- most places have feasts, many cultures appreciate fireworks, have veterans, flags etc.

There could be "Nascar" "Real housewives" or "Kardashian" challenges- but I suppose every village has it's own idiots, so those challenges might be applicable as well...

There's a challenge......Global Idiot: Take a picture of your country/culture's village idiot, preferably in his/her natural state of idiocy.

LOL!!!

Yes, but selfies are with local significance. According to the description, this one would match a photo of a politician :-)

I'll have to take a picture of a nice meal. I made a thanksgiving feast, but I did not take the time to photograph it. It just takes too long to get it to the table and cools down too quickly. After all that time cooking, I wanted my family to have a warm meal!

So one cell phone picture, because my daughter wanted to send one out.

I wish I would have saved the carcass. I would have done a shot on that.

(that's a whole 'nother story. When we were married, we were half a country away from family, so I made the thanksgiving dinner for just the two of us. I made a HUGE pot of turkey soup with the carcass. It was very, very good. However, we didn't cook much, so we lived off of turkey soup for a very long time. (froze it in bags -- it freezes well).)

We have been married for 25 years now. And my husband still doesn't want me to make turkey soup. I'm just getting around to thinking about it

Reminds me of the time when Brother in law and I dismembered a pig ( he was a farmer) on the kitchen table with a Knife, tomahawk, large woodsaw and a meat cleaver, Back in the days in rural nz.

My large soup pot smelled like turkey soup for years. Even though I made jams, jellies, and other preserves in that pot, it still had a smell of turkey soup.

So the carcass didn't get saved.

well down here if you a Tanga Te Whenu we have a hangi or a boilup in the back yard with plenty of Tuis to drink. Usually a Fight breaks out with one faction of the family abusing the other. The Boys in Blue arrive, and take the offenders to the cells where they are fed with Mcdonalds.

Generally they get bailed out, return home and start all over again

Just to point out -- 4 out of the top 5 were not your typical Thanksgiving feast. And two of the top 5 were not Americans.

It's all at how you look at these challenges. :)

Congrats to the winners!
