yes he was.

his point was that Photoshop cheapens photography. i disagree. post processing takes time and effort a lot of people dont put in and then wonder why their images dont look good.

i think a lot of people see the expert editing ruleset and its "oh shit, i actually have to put effort into this challenge."

You read a whole lot more in to what he wrote:

I don't think I've ever read a debate here about the pros and cons of heavy photoshopping/expert editing, this is really refreshing. I'll be watching this with keen interest.

like the rest of the same post?

However, for Lucky 7 the challenge, IMO, also the challenge description, is to "Take a photograph which contains exactly seven of the main subject." - not,
"Copy and paste new layers for 7 different objects and make it look like there was 7 main subjects in the initial photograph."

Key words: "Take a photograph".
Not "Photoshop a collage".

or maybe his next post?

I'm just saying that the "challenge" of getting 7 items (that is interesting / unique enough to garner a high score) in an actual first capture is much more challenging than being gifted in photoshop skills to create some image that's a composite of various captures.

or maybe this one?

I would have preferred the photography choice of Advanced editing for Lucky 7 V, versus the fantasy photoshop choice of Expert editing.

He never said it "cheapens photography" (again your words). You're reading way more into it than I see in his actual words.

funny, through all the complaints of low voting and lack of participation, people are pretty adamant about filling the front page with mundane imagery that fails to lure and wishes to get rid of the top notch quality to draw newcomers and voters in by restricting post processing and polish. i rarely vote because i feel like the quality is slipping and hitting 5 over and over is boring, the images lack the punch and appeal i see on other sites. so now i just wait for you guys to sort through it for me and i'll look at the front page when its done.

im not just advocating Photoshop, i'm advocating that more people try to really put some heart into their work and not just enter as many challenges as possible.

You seem to have sat out the last several Expert Editing challenges - wouldn't it be better to contribute something to each, and better yet share techniques and advice to help those of us who don't know the ins and outs of creating good composite photos?

I try a couple new things every time an Expert Editing challenge comes up, but I don't really know where to begin learning the techniques required to create images like what usually wins in these challenges.

No entry to tonight or tuesday -- I've started knitting again. Making an alpaca sweater!! I guess I can only be addicted to one thing at a time.

I was going to suggest just making the sweater a Size 7, but I don't think that would fit an alpaca ... ;-)

Mine's all photoshopped and ready, just have my fingers crossed that when I get home the guy will have fixed the cable line and I can submit it. Even if not, I'll find some free Wi-Fi and get it uploaded.

My entry will be on the first three pages of the results... as of now, at least.
