Family friend sent my a Facebook message asking me for help with a new aquisition. Unfortunately, I have no experience with the product she's asking about... but I told her I know a bunch of people that MIGHT know a thing or two. So... here I am asking my go-to community. Can you help?
Here is here message:

Hi Vlado. I recently bought an axpro wide angle lens (it screws onto any digital camera lens) I also bought an axpro "platinum edition" filter. Is it necessary with the lens to use the filter. I find that it is not really secure on the point and shoot lens which gives maximum benefit to the wa lens. I tried it on my 250 zoom and it fits really well but then I do not find I get the results with that lens.

Also the WA comes in two parts. I am not sure what to do. The guy demonstrated in the store for extreme close up but I can't get that to work.

I bought in Miami and I am now in Trinidad so who to ask here?? I looked up for tutorial but nothing coming up. Apparently it's very new on the market.

My response:

Sorry Jennifer but I don't have any experience with the Axpro stuff. I assume you could use the lenses without the filters. I can ask on one of my photography forums if you like

Yes please

Is axpro as good as the salesman says it is?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

I'm sorry -- I know nothing about it -- but I'm bumping it for you in case someone else does. :)

(isn't it a body spray?)

I looked it up and it looks like a really low-end workaround for someone who does not have the money to buy a real wide angle lens.

Low end?

Ridiculously expensive for what it looks like you're getting.

Wow, that's insane!!!! I didn't go to the site, just looked at the photos on the search link. Why the heck would someone pay that kind of money and not get a real wide angle lens?????

It is probably an after-market adapter for filed-lens/P&S cameras, not for SLRs. Prices for these seem wacko though -- I got a cheap one essentially as a free throw-in when I bought an inexpensive used camera from another DPC member.

a $1,500 adapter for a $300 camera...????

I got one of those cheapo ones as well a long time ago. Piece of crap which didn't work :)

Given the product descriptions, it seems the adapters are designed for modifying SLR lenses, which should make one have immediate and serious doubts. The other thing that glares out is the blatant use of all the buzzwords, or buzz-acronyms if you will... "HD", "L","IS" (WHAT?) and the faux red band.
Just as telling is the absolute lack of depth of any of the product descriptions. These are adapters you'd expect to see on e-bay for ridiculously *low* prices, and yet here they are at riduculously *high* prices.

Kind of the way art is priced, too, eh?

Check out the Amazon reviews: axpro amazon reviews

They speculate that the website with its expensive prices are to show gullible shoppers: "Look these sell for a lot more than I'm trying to get from you!"
