It looks like the girl/ghost from the movie "The Ring" which could mean we are all doomed for having looked at her....be afraid, be very afraid.

Very eerie.

I would have maybe said it was a pattern on the bark of the tree but the tree is way too far over.

In the comparative shot... why can't you see the tree. The "shack" is quite clear, but no tree?

I dunno, perhaps there is more ambiant light on the house from next door's windows, though they are quite far away, or perhaps the wood of the house is shinier and reflected the flash more.

If you look in the very center of this picture just above the green, it kind of looks like a guy's head with a beard and sunglasses. Bit of a stretch maybe.

I see the problem. The tree next to her is haunted by many spirits. Click on the pic below to see some of them peaking at you taking their picture. Spooky!!!

I think I can solve this one Ben.

On closer inspection I can clearly see Ozzy Osbourne searching for his dog in your garden mouthing the words: "Where the muthaf***ng cr*p has that f***ng mongrel got to now - and who's that f***ng d**khead taking f***ng pictures?" !!

I totally see a woman's face. I thought it could be your reflection, but you say you were outside. So, then I guess it is a ghost. I believe in ghosts. I studied ghosts a bit and have gone to many ghostly location in New Orleans and Charlston, NC, but did not see any. The only ghost I have ever seen was when I was 10 years old. If you want to read the story, read below. Otherwise, move along...

Okay: I was 10 years old and I was at my friend's birthday party. There were about 7 of us girls sitting in the living room chatting (can't remember about what). Anyhow, something zoomed by and went down the hall and up the stairs. I saw it, and ran after it, and two other girls also saw it and ran after me. We stood in the stairwell looking up at the chandelier and there was something swimming around it. By the time the other girls got there, it was quite faint. So, I let them chat about it, knowing what I saw. I wanted to hear what they saw. They, indeed, saw the same thing as I did. It was a jogger or runner, and he ran down the hall and turned into the stairwell. His ghost was blueish. Since they confirmed it, I believed it. My friend, who's house it was, asked her parents... who were sleeping - we woke them! They said they didn't know anything, but with all our frantic questioning, they agreed to ask their realtor (they had bought the house only 1 month before). My friend bugged them for weeks and finally they asked their realtor if the previous owners had ever seen a ghost in the house. The realtor told them that the person who lived there before they bought the house was married to a runner who was tragically killed. So... there you go! I believe in ghosts!

I can see the file, but I don't see a ghost in there. Or is the purple haze above the trees the ghost?

Ok, heres the picture, it was taken Dec 25th (obviously) 1996 with a Nikon F70 film camera, the dates on the back.

Yes it looks like a shadow shaped like a woman. There were no light sources other than a window that was curtained to the left of the christmas tree.

We believe this to be a colonial woman. It was taken in an old carriage house built in the 1700's. My mother in law (the woman in the picture)has seen this figure more than once in the house. I also have 2 friends who have been in the house at seperate times and have seen her. So when i saw this picture, i knew right away who it was.

i just got home and checked it again, i can see it now. prob just some server traffic on the hosts end :)

too bad the shot was with a lo-rez cam, all i can make out is what i would call a lens flare or some other aberration.

At first I couldn't see it but than I converted to grayscale and hit equalize and definitely saw a woman's face (before I looked at the PSd version that someone did with the box around it). Just to be sure I used the shadows dodge tool and saw it then.
I believe in ghosts but not as haunting spirits so much as psychic memory or residue. That's why so many hauntings that have actually been validated are so mundane. The memory of a person repeating a familiar action. For instance, a chair rocking on its own. My friend had a mundane haunting in an old apartment in New York. I person in a robe or housecoat just walked by him in his hallway and his first thought was that it was his roomate ( our brains have to rationalize these things) but then he discovered his roommate wasn't home and he was alone in the apartment.
A woman standing in a garden would be a repeated pattern of behaviour. Judging by the stone outbuilding (and the fact you live in the UK) it looks like an fairly old house.
The other kind of pyschic memory would be of a very violent death. The pyschic pain would leave a residue. I'm not at all a New Age-y kind of person but I truly believe this theory. The fact that we give off energy that has been recorded on film leaves me convinced that we can leave residues of this behind. A pyschic negative. :D

My simple version: I converted to grayscale and used the dodge tool for shadow, set at medium exposure.
