I am still cloudy of the different rules (Expert, Advanced, Minimal, etc). Are we allowed to have dual color processing in Advanced Rules like a black and white picture with some color? or is that not accepted? Thanks. |

Sounds like youre talking about selective desaturation, and yes, that is legal. Just make sure you mask cleanly and there's no coloring "outside the lines" or that might be considered a new area and be DQable |

That could mean two things:
1. A "toned" B/W image, such as what's called a duotone, an image that has an overall color cast added. Sepia images come to mind. Those are fine.
2. A "partially desaturated" image, where all of it's been turned to B/W except some portion, which remains in color. This is alright also, but you have to be sure to "color within the lines". You can't arbitrarily select areas to be colored. |

Thank you Tanguera, I was asking because in a way I did selective desaturation without masking. I opened the picture in Camera RAW, I brought the Vibrance down to about -98 where the picture is pretty much black and white but adjusted the saturation up to a +80. Is this ok, or not. I wanted to use the picture in a challenge but I don't to get my first DQ.

Sounds perfectly fine in advanced editing (and expert, of course).
Minimal editing you can only sharpen and resize. |

That should be fine. If it produces an arbitrary looking result and you are asked to validate, be sure you can give us the details of how you made it happen (like you did above) so we can replicate it. |

Here is a tutorial on how to do it (selective desaturation) within the Basic rules, which sounds siilar to what you're doing ... |

Thank you General, I feel like I'm being a pest and I apologize. Sometimes there are times that I just get coldfeet when I want to submit to a challenge because of the fear of getting a DQ. :( |

Don't EVER think that asking questions makes you a pest. That's why my photography has grown so much, because this place makes it easy to ask questions! I have learned so incredibly much from this site. You can try to do everything on your own, but it's the ability to learn from others, and the willingness of people to share their knowledge, that makes this site sooooo incredible!

DQs happen to some of the best on dpc. It isn't the end of the world. But, if you have time, it is best to run the image past the SC for their feedback. They're pretty good about getting back with you in a timely manner, but don't wait until the last day... ;-p
