This might sound like a dumb question but I am going to ask anyway. We might actually get to see the solar eclipse today and I want to take a picture of it. I figured I'd use the digital display to watch and not the viewfinder. So the question is this: Could I damage the camera sensor by taking a picture of the solar eclipse? I plan on using a telephoto lens.
Thanks! |

Yes. You can. You need a 10-stop ND filter. |

Our partiality starts at 5:52pm and the sun sets at 6:15pm.
Bummer

Not gonna get it here... Just outside the curve. |

If the sun is really low on the horizon you may get lucky. There can be enough haze obscuring things that you could watch it with 2-4 stops of ND filters. It all depends.
We are in prime position to see 60% coverage, but it's October...in Oregon...in October. Not gonna happen. |

If the horizon isn't too hazy this could be much prettier than the normal view, which is just a white circle with a notch taken out of it ... |

Oklahoma is supposed to be able to see it, but it's pretty cloudy today.
This is my first autumn here - supposed to be 90 degrees this weekend and the trees are barely changing, and it's almost Halloween. What the heck? |

Oh, I'll be watching out the bus window. If I remember. (Edit -- oh, wait, that's not a good idea...is it?)
This is a cool site:

Interesting... so next February 12th, it could be either -17 degrees, or 84 degrees. |

Yup. The moral of the story is, it's Oklahoma, the butt-end of the great plains, and anything can happen weather-wise. |

It was behind some thin clouds here, but I found that with the right exposure the sun would "burn right through" ... I want to post a time-lapse, but won't be able to process them tonight ...
Here's a still from about the maximum coverage point -- 100% crop but otherwise unadjusted ...
