How do I add even borders without changing the ratio of the photograph? I've seen it on other photos, I just can't figure it out.

The technique I use is to resize/crop the image down to smaller than the final size, eg 620 pixels wide, then expand the canvas (setting the canvas colour to be the border colour) to reach the final size, eg expand by 10px on all sides to make 640px wide.

If you have a correct ratio photo and you add 10px canvas increase on both width and height then you will lose the ratio.

I've had some problems with this myself and have found the best way so far is to open a new canvas with the right size/ratio in the color of your intended border and then paste the image into that.

I'm also assuming you mean for prints as ratio size means very little in challenges or 'for web' shots.

I tried that, but you end up with the border being thinner on two of the sides. That's why I said "even border".

Figure out what size you want the final picture and how thick a border, then crop making an allowance for that. For example, crop to 620 x 460, enlarge the canvas to 640 x 480 and you have an even 10-pixel border.

If you've already cropped to the final size, and have nothing critical at the edges, you can "Select All" and apply an inside stroke to make the border.
