I just ran across this page. I find it quite interesting about the percentage of gun owners and what counties / parishes have the most. How accurate the data is I don't know. It does not surprise me that my parish is number 18 on the list.
Gun map
It also reminded me that this weekend is 2nd amendment tax holiday. I need to stock up on ammo, etc.

its based on percentages, I'd be more interested to see the percentage AND the population of the county. |

You'd probably get better/more useful information by analyzing population density. |

I'd EXPECT to see high percentages of gun ownership in rural counties, where hunting is a much more prevalent activity. Note that a county in Alaska was #1 on the list, for example. But in any case, population density is the real key here. The guns that people like me worry about are the ones in densely-packed, urban environments. |

Surprising absolutely no one, Louisiana is the state with the highest level of gun violence (and a gun-murder rate more than 2-1/2 times the national average), followed by Alaska, Alabama, Arizona, Mississippi, South Carolina, New Mexico, Missouri, Arkansas and Georgia. The same states all rank at or near the top for firearm suicides, violence against women, firearm deaths among children, aggravated assaults with a firearm and gun exports. 8 of those are among the 10 states with the weakest gun laws. See if you can guess from that map which state by itself had over 1,000 more people murdered by guns over the past decade than all U.S. combat deaths in Iraq... |

Nope, guess again. Hint: New Orleans has a FAR higher firearm murder rate than Chicago. It's not even close. |

Interesting...
Can you come up with a list of things these two cities have in common which may have an effect on this outside of gun ownership rates?
Clearly not all areas that have similar rates of gun ownership have this problem, therefore I'm tempted to conclude that the problem lies elsewhere.

I have a couple of words for New Orleans..... NINTH WARD....
I accidentally wound up in the ninth ward once and it was after dark. The police escorted me out with lights blaring, running red lights and the whole works. That is the type place that is.

Sure, and maybe you can come up with a list of things outside of overeating and lack of exercise that cause obesity just to avoid the plainly obvious correlation? |

What a disappointing (although expected) answer.. |

Mmm, yeah... not anything like the sunny butterfly meadows of Chicago. It must have been scary with all those slingshots and baseball bats around. Lax slingshot laws, you know. Hey, while you're out buying ammo to fend off the 9th Ward zombies you've armed, maybe you can pick up another data blindfold for Cory? |

Oh Shannon.... I see the data. I was asking you to actually think, to actually go beyond the numbers.. although clearly your position is so weak that you've now resorted to ad hominem attacks instead of reasoned discussion..
I'm honestly disappointed. |

I fixed some typos for you. You're welcome. ;-D
Reasoned discussion on this topic ended years ago, and you've shown zero interest in it.

Wow, so Chicago began issuing concealed carry permits in 2014 and the deterrent effect was so powerful that crime fell dramatically to a 41 year low the previous year? HAHAHA.

I guns were indeed the panacea that some make them out to be, one would think that the USA would be by far the safest place on the planet... sadly, it would seem otherwise.

They are, in fact, illegal in Mexico... Surprisingly the murder rate has not dropped significantly. |

I'm sure you chose a country overrun with drug violence and ready access to American firearms with little gun control enforcement purely by coincidence, as if a 9 year old couldn't spot the problem with that reasoning. Hey, guns are illegal in Libya!*
*Kindly pay no attention to the relative effectiveness of real gun control regulation in every single country not engaged in drug/military/religious war. |

the article Shannon posted listed many reason why the crime rate fell. new police tactics and my personal favorite a summer jobs program, who knew that giving the folks who commit and fall victim the crime rate something to do besides cause trouble or be in harms way would be a solution? |
