I would imagine that it scored average (a five is good) bc LOTS of others did the same concept. Just my thoughts!

So it scored bad just because there were many others of the same idea?

many others that did it better... therefore dropping your score

Yours got 6th out of the 30ish similar shots. So if you look at it that way, you didn't do so bad.

I didn't get to your photo but I tried to be as objective as possible each time I came to a fire and ice shot. Admittedly, it was hard. I think I voted on 15 fire and ice photos and 1 fire and water. I actually rated a few 6 and 7, I believe. I don't think your shot is bad. I'm not sure the about the stonehenge formation of the ice. I probably would have given it a 6.

OK...but is there something wrong with the actual shot...if there wasn't any other "Fire & Ice" How would it rate just as is. That's what I'm looking for, is it badly taken, too dark, ect...

This was a hard one for me. I came back to it 3 times trying to figure out what I could say so here goes:

Overall the shot has no appeal to me personally, there is nothing that jumps out and says to me, HEY! Trying to set up the ice to look like a house was a unique idea or maybe you were going for an arch feeling, not quite sure.

The fire part, the blue part is awesome but the orange part ended up being more distracting to me. Maybe if it was more balance, half blue, half orange? The focus seems a bit soft and the overall shot seemed a bit dark. Does this help?

I'm think I went the direction as melismatica. The Stonehenge (staged) appearance made me look at it differently. I seemed to favor the natural fire/ice pics.

IMO your colors and lighting were excellent. The blues and oranges and black (upper right) work superbly together, as well as the orange glow through the ice.

I think it scored a little low even if it was a common theme. For me I would have liked to see a little more definition in the flame (faster shutter) and more balance in the composition with more yellow flame on the right. A little more light falling on the front.

You could have gone for a more stonehenge look by not using that half circle cube on top. Instead a more rectangular block would work better. I think more clear blocks would have helped. You need some imperfections for interest but clear ice would allow for interesting shapes reflections and refractions.

Seems a little one dimensional. Perhaps another set or two of the blocks to continue the structure or some detail in the deep background to give some depth.

You suffered from the common solution discount. Take a look at the others who came up with this solution to the challenge, and you will see lots of ones and twos and threes on technically compotent shots. Using an obvious solution (I would call it classic since I did the same) seems more heavily penalized than not solving the problem at all. There are a number of shots in the top few percent that while lovely, if they were stripped of their title would seem to present no opposition what so ever. So next time be sure not to use whatever great idea first occurs to you, if an answer occurs to too many people it must be wrong, after all look at the people we elect to government.

I think you have really nice colors. I think the centered approach isn't very dynamic here. Perhaps a crop on the right might have worked, since you needed the flames for the concept. Maybe also a slight change in perspective (shooting up or down). (I realize all that's difficult when you are concerned about burning down the house.)
