My opposites photo did not do very well--thankfully broke 5 in the "cleansing" of the votes.

I got 55 votes three and under. I suppose since it's focused and I believe well composed, most of you didn't see the opposites. It's perhaps my fault I gave it a title that not only didn't explain the opposites but may have mislead the "quick" into thinking it was mother and daughter that were opposite.

It was their clothes that were the main "opposite" focal point. By the way, this was not staged. We were on a family walk, I had my camera looking for opposites, and my daughter pointed out the way they happened to be dressed!

Thanks to all who left a comment. Kudos to some of critics for finding a number of additional opposites here!

I'd love to here any additional comments--especially if there was something else in the photo that dragged it down.

If it wasn't for the title I would've thought sisters. The opposite clothing added a nice touch to the shot. The winding road makes your eyes follow it. This makes the composition interesting.

Hi Neil,
I Liked that shot and rated it as a 7.
Strong contrasts and colors set this one apart.
BTW, you didn't mention it, but look at the right leg/left leg. Opposite strides.
Well Done!

I didn't get around to voting on this one during the challenge, but the FIRST opposite that I saw was the colors of clothing. The mother/daughter thing doesn't even strike me as very opposite.. maybe because I'm so close and similar to my mom. I liked how different this one was from the others.. though I think I may have liked to see their faces rather than their backs. Just personal preference.

I picked the colors as the opposites and and not mother/daughter,
liked the layout with 3rds and the curve of the road leading forward
nice and clear
they seem to be happy together
I gave it 8 during voting sorry I didn't have time to comment before

It took me until the second viewing when I was reviewing my scores (redundant, sigh) to see the clothing opposite. I bumped the score up accordingly.

And yes, your daughter is too young to be my long-lost friend! I didn't know there were so many Neil Shapiro's in the world! My Shapiros moved from Colorado, so I have no idea where they might pop up.

Thanks for the responses so far!

I should have added that I just selected that title because it sounded cool, it was not intended to add mother daughter to the list of opposites.

I hope to hear from the late night/morning crowd too, especially the 3 and below crowd (no hard feelings or offense taken, but I would like to confirm if this is the reason why it scored so low.)

I'd appreciate anyone else who would care to comment on why this did so poorly--and whether you saw that the opposites were their clothes, despite the title!

I gave your shot a 7 and the opposite clothing was the first thing I noticed about it. It was so obvious that I assumed it was staged. I can't imagine that anyone would cast a vote without noticing that, but I guess it's possible.

Regardless, it's nothing to worry about. Either your pictures connect with people or they don't. That doesn't make this picture any less creative, beautiful, or meaningful to you and your family who should have a framed 8x10 copy of it propped up on your mantle. Congrats on a great shot.

Thanks Philip and everyone else who responded.

Still, no one has given me any feedback as to why they scored this low. So much for learning from mistakes.

I saw the opposite colors of clothing, but I'm trying to see why the image should have scored higher than it did. What elements do you find made this image worthy of a higher score? I see two people walking arm in arm on a road.

I am not claiming this is pulitzer price work, and while the two are posed, the scene was not set up. From an analysis, I see good color, focus, and exposure, and most of all composition (including the winding road angling through the shot), and harder to spot perhaps, a closeness in my daughters expression and their body language between mother and daughter.

I haven't heard anything critical yet, except for your implication that it is unnoteworthy, a photo deserving of a 5.0. I have no problem if people didn't connect with this and gave it a 5, or even a 4, which sounds like your case. I am looking for comments from the 54 people who gave this 3 and below. Look at the non-normal distribution of scores here. People picked up on something, or didn't pick up on something that skewed it that way.

No offense, but your statement is kind of weird. In the same vein as your comment, what is it about DPC that you think people better connect with your fly and dead bee photo for opposites that makes it worth more than a 5.0?

I caught the opposite clothes, but it took a couple moments of looking at the picture. I gave the photo a 6- pretty good by my scoring standards (nothing in this challenge got more than a 7 from me). The photo is very good technically- sharp focus, good exposure, good framing. While it does meet the challenge, I typically don't add any points for this. Meeting the challenge should be a given. To score something higher than "above average" it not only needs to meet the challenge and be excellent technically, it also needs to have a subject that I find extremely interesting, or something that makes me go "wow". That is a very subjective factor and totally dependent on my personal tastes and preferences. I try to think 'is this something I would hang on my wall?' and vote accordingly. For me, this photo lacked those elements and thus I arrived at the 6.

I hope that helps! I understand your frustration with the low scores. It seems that subtelty isn't the way to go in these challenges...
