I am a new entrant to this site, and have enjoyed photography for quite some time (although, never took it seriously).
Just to introduce myself, I am an Entrepreneur, and founder CEO of my start-up venture Sixth Sense Business Solutions.

I hope to renew my hobby afresh, taking it to a more serious level.

Any sugesstions?

Welcome. This is the absolute best site to improve your photography. You've arrived during a site league competition, so things are just a little different. Just make sure to actively participate with voting AND commenting, and not just entering ;)

Hopefully, this isn't just a sneaky, back-door way to push your business (forgive me for being suspicious........ I seem to be allergic to spam).

If you are for real, then you're very welcome, we'll love having you here.

Make sure to read the editing rules for each challenge......... many newbies get caught by the complexities of those rules.

I wish you good luck and lots of fun entering challenges.

Shoot in manual mode (A or T at least)
Shoot in RAW or RAW/Jpeg - starting with the RAW image is a huge boost to getting the results you need/want in editing.
+1 to tanguera's advice to enter AND comment a lot. She's fond of saying that you learn almost as much by commenting on others' work as you do by shooting. BTW - review the threads on how to comment - if you criticize the photographer, expect to get flamed. Folks here are passionate about what they do. A thoughtful, helpful comment (even if negative) is very much appreciated.
+1 to Beetle's advice to study the editing rules for each challenge. dpc not only has very specific rules, but the Site Council enforces them. In a recent challenge, one of the site's top ribbon winners was DQ'd from a 2nd place finish. You have been warned. At the same time, don't take a DQ too hard - everyone face plants from time to time.
Participate in side challenges - watch the forums for these - it is a less formal situation than the challenges, and a great chance to get to know others on the site.
Keep you camera with you, shoot often, be creative, enter often, and have fun.

as a fellow 'hobby' photographer, accept that many people here have either been doing this for many, many years, and/or are professional photographers for their living, so take scores with a grain of salt (though early on it might be easier with a lick of salt, a wedge of lemon and some tequila).
Have fun, experiment, be unafraid, there is a great, supportive community who are always ready to help when asked, but are somewhat jaded on the offering overly constrictive criticism due to some vocal minorities rabble-rousing, so don't take the quietness to heart.

**Don't use images that you took outside of the challenge dates as that is an instant dq
**Pay attention to editing ruleset do and don't lists
**Comment on other entries, what you like, what you don't like (politely or bluntly, but if it's rude perhaps it's best to not say it), that is the surest way to improve your own images. It sounds backwords, but when you are setting up a shot, or editing after, you will look at your image and say "i didn't like this aspect in another picture, i'm going to try something else" or even "wow, i didn't like that before, but now i can appreciate it differently and maybe i was too harsh and/or close-minded before".

Lastly: Don't stay up late, eat your veggies, brush your teeth and get plenty of rest ;p

Welcome to DPC.
All the above, plus, don't forget to set the date & time correctly in your camera. Many great photos have been DQ'd because the date stamp in the exif file didn't fit the challenge dates.
The method/software you use to transfer your camera files to your computer may modify them. That's another problem that has popped up when people need to submit an original camera file for verification. There are a few threads about this in the archives.
Have fun shooting, and show us some good stuff.
