This is like nothing we have ever planted nor any of my close neighbors. Best guess is a bird deposited the seed. But we have been unsuccessful in identifying it. Location: North West corner of MA; plant has not flowered or born anything other than leafy structure; it currently is just over six feet tall. Anyone know what this is?

I think that is called a Poke Weed. It does flower and grow berries but they are highly toxic. |

I'm not aware that pokeweeds grow purple leaves, though... |

definitely Amaranthus. let it bloom, ripen, collect the seed and voila: quinoa. |

Quinoa comes from Amaranth?! Strange...I have both amaranth seeds, and quinoa, and would never guess they were from the same plant. But I'm sure your botanical know-how is leaps and bounds ahead of mine, Timmy! :-) |

Thanks for the replies. Amaranthus it is. Quinoa and Amaranthus are not the same plant, the seeds are very similar in nutritional content and thus comparable.
