HOLY CRAP......i am one of those people who is unbelievably afraid of insects, the page was loading in another tab while i fixed the url here, and i tabbed over and freaked out. That IS HUGE and gross.....keep it away. burn it with fire...if there are more, burn them all with mother-fn'n-fire - the kind that Samuel L Jackson would be profanely calling forth.....
i would have an absolute fit if i saw one of those flying anywhere near me

Well, at least you wouldn't complain about mosquitoes if a bug was carrying off your dog. |

It's a stump borer or root borer beetle. I've seen several in my yard.

I'm with Cory. It's GORGEOUS. And the nice thing about Dobsonflies, of which that is a giant version, is that they are sort of like miners' canaries: they are primary indicators of water quality, only living where water is clean and pure. If your Dobsonflies start disappearing on you, something's wrong with your local body of water :-) |

I love insects.. I should have been a insectapologist... (if that is even a word)
That is really, really awesome looking..
As for Don's bug
we call them: Broad-Necked Root Borer
A few insects I have not seen at all this year are my pollinators of bees and butterflies (monarchs) that really scares me.. My veggie garden hasn't bloomed well cause of not having them around much..

An entomology etymologist is one who determines if that is even a word. |

I saw a Tee shirt the other day I liked. A big graphic of a honey bee and the words "If I die, I'm taking you with me." Funny, cause it is scary.
The fact that China still has bugs that are indicators of clean water environments amazes me. I give them another 5 years, tops. |

I was thinking something similar, but think it had mutated from a much smaller version due to the toxic environment. |

They're indigenous to tropical environments in China, Vietnam, like that. Not to the industrialized North. |

Pollution in China is not just limited to the industrialized North. China's Sichuan province where this creature was found according to the article is one of the highest water polluted areas in China. Just shows Chine really gives a crap about the environment. Of course we could say that about many places in the world. Just an hour from where I live we spent 10 years plus fighting a local municipality over dumping raw sewage directly into a creek that fed into a major river system. I filmed it and put together the presentation to the EPA. |
