I saw people pleading for a Canada Day challenge and not one peep and then I see this new challenge for the 4th.
I am so pissed I could spit...
Thank you for letting us know just how much you value your international friends.

Yeah I rolled my eyes when I got the email about the speed challenge. Pathetic. |

To be fair, I did not see the suggestion for Canada Day until the 1st, and at that point it was too late. =[ I am all for scheduling more unique and varied speed challenges. Living in the US, I'm basically slapped about the face for a few days with the fact that it's July 4th, so it's hard to miss. =/ |

Now I'm imagining Langdon getting slapped in the face with fireworks.
I think I have my idea for the challenge! :) |

I must say that I am completely baffled.
I start a thread to bitch about what I had perceived as a slight, thinking that with several hundreds of my fellow Canadians being registered with DPC that it might generate enough support to have a July 1st a challenge in future years.
Thank you to those who did take the time to respond and express their views.
To the rest of you, all I can say is that there are many in the USA who would describe Canadians with a word that starts with "P"... but sadly that word is not 'Polite" but rather "Pussy".
Thank you for enforcing that view. :O(
To those who would find my comments too harsh... well I guess I simply do NOT fit the mold of what is viewed as the typical Canadian... but ask me if I really give a shit.

I think it died because Langdon came out to actually respond with an explanation of why he didn't get that done for you. Honestly, I think pushing it much beyond that kinda seems useless or worse, especially in light of Bear's promise to see items like this put on the list if you will only post a suggestion and PM him about it a couple of weeks in advance.
Hope that doesn't seem rude or mean spirited, I just think you seem to have gotten a hugely positive response here, and can't quite figure out why it wouldn't please you. I may, however, have missed some crucial point, so my apologies if that is the case.

Granted you usually are not on the opposing side to Ray. If you had been you would have felt the Wrath of Ray! Still I think he took it up a notch this time. BTW Ray most United States citizens don't think of Canada in the way you stated. In fact we don't really think much about anything to do with anyone besides our self. My day exist based on when I wake up what is for breakfast, about that time I start planning lunch. Midday I have a snack and end up eating something for supper. A few bathroom breaks during the day. Pretty simple in terms. Most people just go about their daily lives and don't worry about things that truly do not matter. It helps lower the stress. I do get bored with this site from time to time with the same old competitions. I know as many of you do it is actually hard to keep recreating the wheel and make it possible everyone can be involved since members are from many places around the world. So keep pumping the ideas in and make sure you give the powers that be the time they need to set it up.

It would be a good thing for Canadians (French: Canadiens) to remember their monarch.

Trust me when I tell you that the French Canadians remember only too well the treatment they received from the British.
When one considers that approximately half of the Canadian population are ambivalent at best when it comes to the Monarchy, your comments should also be directed at the other of the two official linguistic groups.

Gee, there's no Bastille Day challenge either ... maybe someone should report the site directly to the State Department for investigation into whether it's deliberately undermining international relations and trying to draw us into a(nother) shooting war ... |

Maybe we should have a weekly holiday challenge. Here's a handy-dany guide for everyone to use in posting to the Challenge Suggestions thread. :-) |

Yeah almost forgot about French Canada and their attempt to leave the common wealth. Hmmm if they would have succeeded then there could have been an argument for two Canadian Holiday photo shoots. Same could be said for other nations to. Damn this is just to complicated. Let's just have another free study. |

Actually, they wanted to separate from Canada.
If they succeeded, they would no longer be part of Canada and hence would not celebrate anything Canadian.

Really? Like the 4th of July? but to quote your original statement "I am so pissed I could spit... " Did you ever think that is why there are almost always 4 contest going on at all time? Granted if they did Canada Day I would not enter it. Not because I have any personal feelings, but I just don't live there. I would find another contest to enter. If you truly are so pissed you could spit over such a little thing like not having your idea used on a photo contest website with a ribbon posted as the prize maybe it's time to take a break.

Perhaps you are not astute enough to understand that this is NOT the first time that this challenge was suggested and that once again the suggestion fell on deaf ears.
Take a quick look at my profile and I am certain you will be able to gather very quickly just how much challenges mean to me.

If you want to make the claim that some other international holiday should be showcased, it might be best to pick a time when a less photogenic American holiday is featured.
Eta: I love Canada and would gladly attempt any Canadian holiday photo challenge. Boxing day, whatever that is, let's petition to make it happen.

Ok so to the powers that be. Who has the ability to approve and setup a challenge? If Ray's assertion is correct and you did have 5 days notice that some people wanted a Canada Day challenge and that this was not the first time it fell on deaf ears why? Now I have no proof except there was a post in suggestions on the 25th of June and multiple request. I know I saw at least one Site Council member posted they thought it was a good idea in that thread. I know I saw where it was posted by Langdon he did not see the post till the first. Is that a valid excuse? I don't know the answer. Maybe the Site Council or Langdon can shed some light on what it takes to maintain a website of this nature. How busy their real lives are. I cannot speak for them, but I will ask the question and except their answer as the truth. |

There is no Canada Day challenge listed in the queue as a topic, so it's not surprising that Langdon wouldn't know about it. Making a general suggestion in the forums is one thing, but someone needs to write an actual topic and description details to get it listed, and even then there's no guarantee it would be chosen. Some topics are picked up immediately while others have been in the queue for years. |

It's up to SC to get the challenge suggestions in the queue; that's one of our jobs. By default, the queue is sorted by date, so the most recent suggestions are at or near the top. The queue can also be sorted by topic or by concept, and it can toggle previously used topics visible/not visible. As you can imagine, by now the list is a very long one.
SC, however, has no power beyond the power of suggestion to make a given challenge happen: Langdon is the one who makes the actual choices.
In the particular instance, I saw the thread suggesting a fireworks display a few days before the 4th, and I thought to myself it would be a good time for a speed challenge. But I didn't want it to be just fireworks, since not everybody is American, and anyway not all Americans can easily access fireworks on the 4th. So I wrote a challenge description that opened it up to anything along the independence-celebratory thing that I thought would fix that problem, entered it in the database, specified it as a speed challenge, and contacted Langdon directly to let him know it was all set up and ready to go if he chose to run it.
Then, like everybody else, I sat back to wait.
I was pretty amazed at the amount of blowback this has gotten, especially since I've assured the Canada people that NEXT summer, if they remind me in time, I'll be sure something that features their particular viewpoint is at least entered in the queue and brought to Langdon's attention.
But now I'm seeing all these asides regarding all these different countries with their own different festivals and ceremonies, and at least an implied suggestion that we need to cover all those bases to be "fair", which frankly seems a little unreasonable to me, but hey, I'm just one guy...
ANYWAY: if you're from anywhere other than the USA and you want a special-event challenge featuring something YOUR country is proud of, just start a thread proposing it and fire a PM to me alerting me, and I'll be sure it gets into the queue at the right time, okay? That's all I can do. 2-3 weeks before desired challenge would be about right. We can't promise that all (or even any) of these local-color challenges will run, but at least we'll have tried?
OK? Peace Out, all! Love ya!
R.
