So I recently just asked a question earlier about Canon lenses and I decided to only upgrade and get 2 lenses.

1)EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

2)and I'm having a hard time choosing a good telephoto. I'm stuck between either the 70-300L or 100-400L lenses. I've read the 70-300 has better IQ overall and completely weather sealed but the extra 100mm is also hard to pass up. Also, browsing through photos on here there are remarkablly more photos from the 100-400L but I'm assuming that's because that lens has been out longer?

Any advice?

If size and weight are important to you, go for the 70-300. If telephoto reach is more important, then get a Tamron 150-600. It's cheaper and longer than the 100-400, and offers similar image quality, but it's a beast.

Absolutely. Plus, there are a lot more options in the x-300mm range, at more price points, than there are in the x-400mm range, so that's a factor. I have the 100-400mm, and it's a nice lens, but if I were buying long glass now, I'd be looking REAL seriously at the Tamron 150-600mm, as Shannon suggests.

The 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro is just an EXCELLENT choice as far as I'm concerned, it's my second-favorite lens after the 16-35mm f/2.8L, but I'm a wide angle sort of guy. I absolutely LOVE my Canon 17mm TSE tilt/shift lens, but it's such a specialized beast I can't say it's my favorite :-)

Thanks guys! Honestly, Bear my favorite lens that I have now is my 24mm prime f/2.8. I love the wider angle, so I totally understand. I really want to get better at wildlife photography too though so that's why I'm going after a telephoto. I never even considered the Tamron before. I am saving up for it so I have a couple more months of research and finger biting before I can get it anyways. I'm gonna have to take a real hard look at all 3 of these lenses now haha.

I rented the 70-300L a while back ago and I really liked it. its lighter than the 100-400, and its not as big, so its easier to lug around, the AF is much faster and the Image quality was a tad better than the 100-400.
I opted to get the 100-400 instead because the 100-400 L was on sale for $150 off at Amazon, plus a $200 rebate from Canon.

After this thread I ended up with 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS

Thanks everyone! After consideration of all your input as of right now I am really leaning towards the Tamron 150-600mm. I will update you when I am able to buy it and how I like it. Thanks!
