What do you think about this photo? It was my second choice for the Centered challenge.

I like it a lot. I would have given it a 6 or 7, maybe more.

I didn't say it was easy. I've tried this as well. You can interesting effects.

Yes, aren't these fun to do! IMHO, colorful subjects produce the best effects (as you said, I probably oversubdued my centered alternate).

I've done quite a lot of these now, beginning with my abstract submission (which I think people thought I did in Photoshop). I was originally inspired to move the camera by Andrew Chamber's work over at Photopoints, but of course it's been done many times before by many people to good effect.

Here are some of my samples. Please let me know what you think!

Chris, I'm sorry but I fail to see what is your centered subject in this photo.

treat the boat and the skier as one and it'll make sense. it's a stretch, but i could squish it into my 'meets the challenge' box. I try to be pretty liberal.

P

Thanks P, that is how I was looking at it. I guess this would have bombed just like the one I entered (which the subject IS centered), so it doesn't really matter.

Absolutely stunning... can you let us know in more detail how you achieved these shots? Specifically the first one. I'm sure I wouldn't stand a chance of getting any like these without more guidance...

Thanks. I believe I posted exposure data on each one. The rest is mainly practice holding the camera and moving it subtly or sometimes not so subtly. The Dandilions were done a little differently--by rotating the camera left then right around the same center point of the axis quickly. Another trick is that during the exposure, rest at the point of the movement where you want detail slightly longer. But generally, you are talking 1/8 second exposures to 1 second exposures, and you have to practice a lot to think and move subsecond. Often, it's not possible to do this while pressing the shutter, so I make use of the self timer, so I can focus on the camera movement. In any case, you are lucky to get 1 for every 100 shots you try, so stay with a subject and keep trying until you get what you want.

This is one of the photos that I chose not to enter. What do you folks think of it?

I was thinking of doing it all over, but that's just not my style :)

Oskar-

I think this would have done very well, IMO. I love the way you captured the speed of the water and how it frames the rock. Nice job! I could easily give it a 9 or 10.

It may be hard work but you have certainly got results from it..these are quite breathtaking.

Once you start doing stuff like this you can't stop. It's addicting. I love the colours you got.

This was one idea I had, but it needs something more to it plus I forgot to take that darn ring off:/

I think you were on to something there. Very nice feel to it.

I have been wondering how this would have done in the centered challenge

I was really thinking of taking it again and have something more interesting in the window

Not too sure I entered the right one either. Trouble is I wasn't satisfied with the lighting on this one and didn't have a chance to reshoot:
