...Should this not be a slam dunk...I mean guns are registered right?

Only in a piece meal manner right now. It depends on the age and make of the gun. On a recent gun an American manufacturer would be able to tell by serial number which retailer they sold the gun. At that point ATF could visit the store and go through the records and "maybe" find the first purchaser. An investigation would then be needed to find the chain of ownership. Very ifffy. Likely only to be pursued if the gun had been used in a serious crime. Some idiot leaving it in the toy section of a store? Not so much. That being said many stores have their records computerized by the ATF when they close down and ATF can force this issue for any number of reasons. So the newer the gun, the better the chance of simply typing in the serial and finding the first purchaser. Idiots are generally not that lucky so maybe they'll find her. Wonder if she arrived home and found the plastic version in her holster. Ooopps! :) |

Your comment implies that a majority of idiots, gun owners, and/or idiot gun owners are female -- I suggest that this is highly likely to be statistically inaccurate to an astonishing degree ... |

I didn't posit any theory on the sex of idiots. I just threw some bait in the water. Got a fish I didn't expect. :)
I suspect your theory is correct. More than likely a male left the weapon in the Target. And more than likely this male is a felon and does not possess a valid license to carry concealed. Which also means the weapon was probably not obtained via legal channels so bureaucratic attempts to trace the chain of possession won't result in identification of the idiot.
But I wonder why the idiot had the gun out in the toy section. Unless a comparison with the toy equivalent was the goal I just don't get it. Darn, there I go expecting clear thinking from an idiot. Especially a forgetful one!
If I were into conspiracies I might think Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America could have arranged for the weapon plant to help with their efforts at convincing retailers to place signs banning weapons in their stores. Naw, a loaded weapon in a toy section? What if a kid picked it up? We all know any male child who handled it would fire it......
