I'm not sure about anybody else, but i love to read and i want to pass that on to my children.
I grew up with a program called Reading Rainbow, and they are looking to redesign themselves for reaching children worldwide in today's world - that means not a reboot of the television show, but making it online, even giving free subscriptions to needing school classes.

The kickstarter for this began yesterday morning and is already benefitting from a great community support effort (myself included), and there are benefits to the backers aside from knowing they are contributing to something worthwhile.

Please, take a look, and even if you do not contribute, help spread the word.

I heard him on NPR yesterday, and I though they said that the Kickstarter campaign had already reached its original goal ... :-)

the goal was $1m. When I looked about 20 minutes ago, it was at $1.795m. Now it's $1.82m. Rising by the minute, and it has 34 days to go.

I think part of the incentive (other than it being an extraordinarily good project) is that (some?) donors may be entered into a sweepstakes to win "the" visor from Star Trek NG ...

Yeah, it reached it's (modest) goal on day1. Something like this takes a lot of work and the additional pledges will not be in vain, and will be used to make improvements and help with funding their programs of providing access to those who need but cannot afford. :)
Many will see that it has reached it's kickstarter goal and not contribute, which is fine, it's a great cause and they have their funding requested, but I still wanted to share this with the community here - some may want to donate for the physical reward offerings, some may not have known the app was even in existence on apple, or others (like myself) may donate in the hope that it will help facilitate the expansion effort of the program to more than just Apple-converts and be available on Android devices (that costs money to develop, but those platforms are also more affordable to lower income people, due to non-propriatery OS/hardware, who still are able to have *something*, and as such the RR mandate of available to everybody should include that platform)

The visor thing was a $10,000 donation level item - you get a private dinner with Levar and get to wear the Visor, which is the same one they used as the prop on the show. I don't think you get to own it unless they decided to put something like that in there during the past hour.

OK, I guess I only half-heard the interview and missed the details, though I did think you had to be a large donor ... I appreciate your bringing this to our attention -- it is a great project with the potential to make a big difference in a lot of lives.

If you are an Amazon Prime member, there are a number of free episodes of the classic Reading Rainbow available for streaming.

Some are...shall we say...special. :)
