I am about to trade in my iPhone 4s for a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. I like the outdoors and the Sony is waterproof, is high spec and still small enough for single hand use.

Just curios what DPC thinks.

So?

I don't like the interface of the Sony XPERIA's, it is not as intuitive as the iPhone IMO. But battery is much better.

That Sony looks pretty sweet. I have been eye-ing a waterproof case for the 5s so I can definitely identify with the desire for a waterproof device.

If I were you, I would try it at a store. Try doing the things you normally use the iPhone for. Look for the apps you normally use and make sure they are available for Android. I've always been a mac user so i really have no experience with Android rahter than iOS - but this looks like some serious competition for it.

I hate my Iphone....
I am going to go back to android as soon as our contracts up

I have not looked in that Sony, but a few friends have one and its pretty sweet from what I saw, but I am old kind of cell phone user (with the real buttons) so, I am not sure about that, I plan on doing more research and playing at the cell phone stores soon, but not yet, If you do decide to get one, please update us..

Waterproof is a huge thing for me too and a plus :-)

you can change the launcher on android if you dont like proprietary interface. Heck you can even make it look like iOS if inclined.

I'm currently using the Google Now launcher and its amazing, it could use some more customization features, but its clean, puts google now right on its own swipe page and allows realtime listening, just say "OK Google ..." and the phone activates and waits for your command, no button pressing, really sweet.

i'd choose andriod 10 times out of 10 for my phone OS, iOS died with steve jobs, they haven't had a new innovation since siri and Google Now simply crushes it in ability if you allow google to mine your data.

some people think its crazy allowing google to know so much about me but i dont care, its make my life easier and they get to sell to advertisers, fair trade if you ask me. my phone knows when i leave work, leave for school, every week i go to my friends house on the same day and it pull up a traffic card, it has built in location reminders, based on my searches it recommends musics and things to do i would have never even known about. heck it even knows when i park my park my car so i can find it easily if i need to without even thinking to mark the location manually. i could go on and on.

Thanks guys.

I'm back from the shop. It looks awesome, it feels awesome.

I am transferring all the contacts and others from my iPhone. Smooth.

The phone was USD554.372. I got some cash rewards USD103, I traded the iPhone for USD270 so the rest instalment for 1 year @ US14/month.

Happy belated birthday hehe

It's been about a month and it has been up and down with this phone. Initially a got a bit frustrated with it but now I just blame the switch between systems. Both have ups and downs so it is a matter of what you are used with.

However, that being said right now I can say that is a nice piece of technology that is flawed by some minor bugs (some do get on my nerves though).

So without discussing iOS vs Android here is what I like about it and what make me have no regret purchasing it:

1) Waterproof ΓΆ€“ I did take it in the sea (swim in open see and tracked it with the GPS) but in a waterproof pouch. So if the pouch has issues hopefuly is still OK :). I did hike in the rain and it worked flawlessly. It also has a magnetic side charger so no need to open any of the compartments that are sealed and can connect via WIFI with the computer.
2) Can take micro SD card. It has 16G build in for apps and can record the movies and pics on the SD card.
3) It has a shutter button that works like one ΓΆ€“ half press locks the AF and AE.
4) You can still use the volume up as shutter so a pair of headphones could be used as remote control. Downside: hard to find sets for android.
5) Camera has some manual controls like spot measure, manual set for ISO, EV compensation etc
6) Camera has some neat functions like a burst shot at 60fps. It limits to only a reduced resolution but is there if needed.
7) Being Android you have more choices in handling the files but comes with the risk of messing up badly :(
8) Battery life is GOOD.
9) Shutter button makes it very efficient for street photography - at least for me ;)

Glitches worth mentioning:

1) I need to do factory repair 3 times to get rid of a bug that made ALL the images in the device, including all kind of thumbnails visible in the album. REALLY annoying . Now it stabilized.
2) Bought a pair of headphones (JBL) with volume control that are not compatible due to another OS bug...
3) It has an annoying crackling sound with the notifications that scratches my tiny brains.
4) Camera did freeze couple of times but not for long and a return to the main screen fix it.

However seems that Sony works on fixing these so I wait.

As a phone runs smooth with good sound, fast LTE connection,

Being a photo site I have created a folder with images taken with the Z1C. Just re-sized pics (1600px) no PP. Better seen in full size (@1600px)

Enjoy browsing through it.

Sony Xperia Z1C

Here is a selection.
