Hello there, everyone. My name is Jake, I live in NJ (the parts you've flown over and not realized it wasn't some other state - so don't knock it 'til you've been here), and I go on most forums as BackdoorHippie, or some variation.
Starting with the handle, it comes from the sign, "Hippies Must Use Backdoor - No Exceptions", which is something that was given to me back in my long hair, music playing days. I took it as a badge of courage and am quick to point out that I'm find using the backdoor since that's the way friends and family have always entered the homes I've lived in. Any references to other uses of rear entrances are quickly and easily ignored.
I'm in my "very-late thirties" (my nieces will tell you I'm currently "Thirty-Nineteen"), a long time musician, time to time writer, overtime golfer and part time photographer, who earns a living at none of those things which is why I probably still have a strong passion for them all. I've been taking pictures since I was a kid with a 110 Kodak camera, posing GI Joe's in the sandbox, but sometime in the midst of the '00s I started differentiating between the snapshots I was taking with my PowerShot and the photos I wanted to take. In early 2011 I picked up a Nikon D7000 in preparation for a trip to Yosemite and haven't looked back.
The D7000 is now converted for Infrared, and I'm shooting with a D600 and a D800. My photography is all over the map in terms of what I have photographed, with my real favorites being abstracts, landscapes, fine art and what I've dubbed Suburb-Ex (Urbex for those of us who live in the sticks). My wife is an avid birder, and our yard can be a bit of a zoo at times, so you'll see a lot of nature photography as well. I work from home and have a camera within reach almost all the time, and I take one with me almost everywhere I go.
I'm looking forward to being a part of this forum. Given the relative sameness of my environment the idea of a different set of challenges every week to inspire creativity is one of the things that drew me here. Hopefully I can play an active role in what appears to be a pretty vibrant community. I'm not sure if posting links to places like Flickr or 500px is kosher, so let's just say that if you're interested in seeing any of my work I go by the same handle over there. |

Great intro. Dig around and get dirty. The side challenges are fun, interesting and helpful, and the recently launched monthly photo essays are phenomenal.

Welcome BDH.
It sounds like we have similar backgrounds. My nickname in the late 60s was Phuzzy Phantom. I missed Woodstock by just not climbing into the hippie wagon when they asked if I wanted to go.
Anyway, I live out int the sticks, and still shoot daily with a well worn 7000, mostly with older glass. We jammed 60's and improv stuff last night for a couple of hours, and it went very well.
I hope you enjoy your time here, meet lots of interesting people, and learn the answers to all life's questions related to photography. |

Ha! Love the handle. We call my daughter a hippie as well - pretty sure she is a flower child born in the wrong generation :) Anyways, welcome and I know you will find lots of inspiration and information here. Have fun! |

Thanks, all. Didn't realize the software stuck an extra // in front of the website link. It's fixed now. |

OK, but if I'm leaving, I'm going out the front door and slamming it when I'm gone!! ;)
I appreciate the complements. I'm still figuring this stuff out. When there's a Basic Edit Challenge I may be in trouble. LOL |

Well then, that would be the perfect opportunity to start getting you out of your comfort zone;-);-)
Welcome aboard to DPC Jake! Had a few moments to take a gander at your Flikr portfolio - lots of great work!

Ah yes, the editing rules will get you every time. They're actually the 2nd most common reason for newbie DQs. The other two are camera not set to the right time/date (go check NOW, thank me later), and keeping an unaltered original file (shoot in RAW, thank me later). |

Welcome aboard, sir. We have at least two aging, honest-to-god hippies on SC: me and GeneralE. Who knows how many we may have in the membership-at-large? I'm just up the coast from ya on Cape Cod, myself. Don't take it too seriously and you'll be fine :-) |

I always shoot RAW and keep the files, but I convert to DNG, which seems to be a non-starter here. I did happen to notice that, so on challenge shots I've also backed up the NEF files just in case. Cameras are always set properly for time and date, though I've managed to go an hour off with Daylight Savings Time on occasions (almost bit me on a contest last year when shots had to be within a 90 minute window).
While I may be a little young to have qualified as a true child of the sixties, I have them in my family, and unlike many of my friends I seem to be gravitating towards the hippie ideal more and more as I move on in life. You can't take it with you, right? |
