It happened again! 9 being injured and I just saw that video of the girls falling.. just made me cringe in pain just seeing that.. I will be praying for their healing and for that not to happen again. It is so sad to have seen this happen in front of kids and families.
However, I have never been to a Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus at all. I Just never got into it I guess.. my sister has never missed a show and has always taken her kid since he was born.
I was thinking this year, might be the year I might go, but after seeing that happen to these girls? It has put me off from seeing anything at all really.
It brings me to a thought, am I crazy for never seeing a circus? Not that I don't believe in them, or that I am against them. I am a HUGE animal lover.. Trained dogs, trained horses, worked at animal shelters and vet clinics over a 15yr span.
I am sure I am not the only one who has never seen a circus.. especially the Ringling Bros.
Just a misfortune and freak accident. My thoughts lie on how you all feel about circuses.
I do have a phobia of clowns though! LOL My best friend loved clowns and collected them.. when she passed away a few years ago, One of her favorite clowns was given to me.. it is nicely hidden in way back of my curio.
Are you a circus lover or hater?

A circus doesn't make my socks go up and down, but other people love it.
The accident is unfortunate, but stuff happens..... I just hope this isn't going to bring out the safety brigade getting all semi-dangerous circus acts banned. |

My folks took me to the circus a kid, Ringling Bros. I think. Also, there were several years I worked the circus (selling soda and popcorn) with my Grandpa for charity. I have to admit that as an adult I have not been back to any circus and I really don't want to. (The motorcycle Circle of Death and the tiger parts of the show always scared me. And while I love animals, there are times even at the zoo when I feel an irrational fear that some of the dangerous animals will escape.)

I have mixed feelings about them. In traditional circuses (such Ringling, et al) I just could not abide the way they treated the animals. I hated watching these magnificent creatures being forced to do tricks. I love animals and love taking their photos, but only in the wild, or only if they're someone's pet :)
Which is why Cirque du Soleil has been so successful. For the most part, I really enjoy their productions - they're all the pageantry and spectacle of a circus without the degrading of animals. OTOH, it can sometimes be a bit weird... |

Tanguera said it better than I could.
I've been to a couple and wish I hadn't.

Dumbo ruined circuses for me. |

I've never been to a circus, either.
I do remember, though, a circus came to town when I was a wee lad and a kid was interviewed on TV. Asked what the best thing was, he said it was when the clown's pants fell down.
That did it for me - no circuses (except for the Circus Maximus in Rome). |

I'm with tanguera, hate to see animals in it (won't go to that kind of circus), but I love Cirque du Soleil, have seen many shows and even once was picked from the audience to be part of it. But even with their high standard of security and safety accidents happen. |

Just like the zoo or the county fair, there's only one animal I'm interested in "shooting" at the circus...

This is kinda cool coming back to seeing the same interests on how people feel.
There is such differences and the amount of debate of circus's what they call for what they do its unbelievable.
I have not heard of this Cirque du Solei.. but will have to check into that to see if they come around my redneck wood of an area. Just seems interesting.
LOL pants falling down on the clowns.. I think that would do it for me as well! |

That was my one and only trip to the zoo. Did NOT enjoy that either :(

I do not like the idea of imprisoned animals either, but I do draw a distinction between circuses and zoos. While the former are solely to entertain us at the expense of the animals, the latter ALSO are often the last remaining place certain animals exist. Many are also involved in preservation and reintroduction programs.
And yes, the irony is not lost on me: I'm aware that they exist because humans are responsible for many of the extinct, or on the verge of, animals.

You said it right there... that humans do.. or that the fact that science thinks they can do things that might help and benefit nature.. but that is another can of worms |

Deleted because it goes against the mass answers.

Wow... That's just heart wrenching. I've never been a huge circus fan, but I don't hate them either... This accident changes nothing for me, but it's horribly tragic all the same. |

For the record, I am not a big fan of the circus (although I have enjoyed numerous depictions of the circus and life there-in in many forms of drama/media) even though as a child in the 50/60's the Wringling Bros. Circus made regular rounds on Long Island and it was nothing out of the ordinary. I believe there were other Circuses as well, but I only clearly remember going one time and of that only a portion and even at that it is all before and on the way to the 'Circus'. But nothing beyond the parking lot and seeing the big tents and all the people and the 'hustle and bustle' as if something 'big' was going to happen and you had to be 'there'. I can clearly see the field with the tents as we made our way weaving through the cars in the parking lot. Beyond that I have nothing. No recollection of the 'Circus' itself. If only I had a camera. |

Hehehehe, for sure! That used to be the old zoo, and it doesn't house anything but graffiti anymore. |

hheheh! Nothing like that kind of a zoo, We have a few old zoos around here that have been abandoned and actually we called it the monkey zoo and when you went in there was an old mother goose as an arch... kinda miss those old days
~~~
