| So i came across a nice deal locally on a like new Canon 70-200 F4L IS USM lens for about $800. Since I already have a 70-300 IS USM (non-L), was wondering if the L lens will provide enough of improved "image quality" to justify it? The 70-300 non-L is pretty good, has IS and has decent quality but I've read F4L-IS is the sharpest of 70-200 (except maybe the much more expensive 2.8 IS II). |

I just got the 70-200 2.8 non IS for just under $900. Is IS really that important to you? If you can give that up you can get the 2.8 for the roughly same price.
The biggest advantage of the 70-200 (both 4.0 and 2.8) over the 70-300 is the speed to get to focus. After the hunt and seek of the 70-300, the 70-200 seems to snap into focus instantly. The IQ is a touch better, just a bit cleaner on edge colors with less purple fringing and it need less sharpening overall, but it isn't really a huge a difference as the performance of the focal acquisition. |

| Hmmm... The reason I did not look for 2.8 non-IS is because size/weight AND that I already got the 200mm/2.8 prime. The only reason I was interested in F4IS is because of its revered IQ. Yes faster autofocus would be another plus. |
