Lolli Pup

Here's her story: 5/13/04

"You know I only call you when I need something, right?" That is how the conversation started.

It was Helen, from the City Shelter. The same Helen who wouldn't put Juniper down. The same Helen who asked me to "foster" an abandoned kitten, who ended up staying here, you remember, Itsy Bitsy?

Well, turns out she needs another foster home for a dog this time. A, wait,I have to go look up how to spell it because I always get it wrong, dachshund (not how I would spell it at all!). An older dachshund. A girl dachshund.

"She only has one tooth and it's loose. She's a real sweetheart, very cuddly, loves people. Do you know anyone who might be able to foster her?" Helen asked fully implying the anyone is me.

"How is she with kids?", I asked, while thinking to myself, 'older dog, female, dachshund, are they nippy?'

"She can't hurt the kids, she doesn't have any teeth!"

"Good point, how about with other dogs? I know mine will be fine but will she?"

"She gets along great with the dogs here, very friendly."

"How about cats?"

"No problems that we've seen so far." Helen replied sounding ever so hopeful.

"We'll take her." I said with a sigh.

"Oh great! Now I don't want to let her go until the vet sees her tomorrow, she has a hole in her gum that's not absessed but not healing either so I want him to take a look at her. You can pick her up on Saturday if you want."

"Well, Melissa has a game in the morning but we can come over after that."

"Great! Just let the girl know you're here to get her since I'll be at Holly's with some cats doing an adoption fair."

"Okay, see you then."

I then call Terry to let him know of the new temporary member coming to visit. He didn't object.

So then I finish the dishes and think, "Wait a second. As crabby as Juniper has been lately I wonder if he will like the new girl." So I grab James and Juniper and head to the shelter.

We walk in and Helen directs us to the cat room, she is in one of their cages because she is so small. They are bursting at the seams, kittens, cats and dogs everywhere! So I go in and find her right away. Three people in the room trying to get pictures of the cats for the website and PetFinders and no one LOVING her! She was whining a little bit trying to get their attention. I told them why I was there and one of the ladies got her out of the cage and we went into the adoption room where we could have some privacy.

This woman proceeds to tell me that she's going to adopt "Baby" (that is what she was calling her) and only had to wait until the 16th when the waiting period was up for the rightful owners to claim her. She also tells me that the dog is in heat, which would explain why Juniper what trying his darndest to mount her. He has NEVER tried that before!

Well I asked the woman if Helen knew she wanted to adopt her because I was there to talk to Helen about foster care. She hadn't so I suggested she tell Helen and maybe she could just foster her.

Well it turns out the dog is NOT in heat, she has been spayed, and the woman can't afford to have a dog, this one will probably need some special care because of her age and condition. So Helen asked if I just wanted to take her now and then bring her back tomorrow for the vet to see. Of course I agreed. She is spotting blood, could be a UTI, find out more tomorrow with the vet.

Later that sameDay

Hi! I'm a PITA, at least that is what the human Deannda kept calling me this evening. I don't know why she calls me that. She was the one who left me in the back yard with those two boys Henry and Bailey! It's not my fault they never found the cool place on the back fence that you could slip under, well, they couldn't but I SURE COULD! The other human, the man she called Terry was watching me but he took the baby human in when it started to rain and I saw my chance and OFF I WENT!

Now, keep in mind, I may be small but BOY CAN I RUN! Just ask the little boy who lives behind them, he saw me running. He was the only one though. I was off on a new adventure, I would have found my way back, maybe. But I never got the chance because there was this really nice man named Frank who found me and took me away. He kept saying he hoped someone would call for me because I was so special.

Well, I got stuck in another carrier, right in front of the door and I cried but they wouldn't let me out. And suddenly, there they were! Those humans that I was with before, the one called Deannda and the other one she called Ellie. She was very happy to see me! And I was happy to see her too! YIPPEE!!! I didn't have to spend the night in that carrier!

But the whole time she was signing the papers and paying the fine (you would think $10 was a lot of money or something) she kept looking over at me and saying, "You are a PITA, do you know what that means? It means you are a PAIN IN THE MMMMPH" (I didn't catch the last word but I'm sure it's a nice one, right?)

But that wasn't the end of my great adventure, they then took me to this huge building where these really BIG animals were running around with other humans on their backs. It was really interesting at first but then I got bored and fell asleep in Ellie's lap.

We then came back to the house and Ellie fed me and showed me around the house some more and now I'm going to bed. Still not sure which bed though, the human Deannda wants me to sleep with Ellie but her bed is too high for me, I don't like it.

Talk to you all later!

THE MAJOR PITA, aka, the new girl in the house

I then proceeded to have a contest to name her
The next day

And the winner is............

Lollipup! Thanks everyone! I have already started her training to her new name by singing it over and over and over again, as have the girls. :)

She went to see the vet at the shelter today, they pulled her only tooth, she cried, then bleed all over my shoulder, the vet was worried I would be upset by the blood. I told her, "It's not the first time I've been bleed on, I'm sure it won't be the last!"

About yesterday, while I was driving up and down the streets looking for her we were on the top street that our street ends at the top of the hill. I was slowly going down the street, looking for her when I looked up and there was a Black Jeep, a newer one that had come up and was starting to make a U-turn. It just sat there for about 30 seconds while I waited and then it turned on it's blinker and went back down the hill and as it turned to go I knew at that moment that Lolli was going to be okay because in the back seat, head out the window was one of the most beautiful Boxers I had ever seen. At that moment I knew that Annie had watched out for Lollie and made sure she was safe. It was then that I went home, called the Horsehead shelter with my missing report and within 10 minutes I got the call back that they had her. If I had just called the moment I got home instead of wasting almost an hour looking for her I would have had her home that much sooner, they had picked her up shortly after 5 PM at the top of 19th street, over 9 blocks away, up some steep hills. The girl can RUN!

Here are some pictures I took this morning, in the sunlight so you can see her more natural colors. She was glued to my side last night, literally, it felt like, I moved, she moved.

She pooped all over the floor in the middle of the night but Terry only cussed for a couple minutes before cleaning it up. I hear him telling the girls not to get attached, she's not staying but while at the shelter today I was told that should I decide not to keep her there is a small dog rescue I could call for her that takes in older dogs. We'll see what happens, I have an idea for a forever home for her but I want to get her on a food schedule and figure out her signals for going outside before I suggest it to this person :)

The vet also thinks she's a bit of a mutant breed because of her markings, size and she has what they call a parrot jaw, the lower jaw is about 1/4 to 1/2" shorter than the top.

So that is the long winded story of the newest member of the house.

Deannda
The long winded one :)

deannda...have you ever thought of writing a childrens book about Lolli Pups adventures illustrated with your beautiful photos of her. I just feel you have a gift both with words and the camera that would lend itself so beautifully to a project like this.
