I was told yesterday that the XD cards are generally faster than the CF cards. The guy in the photo store told me that I would be better of with a CF to XD adapter and then use XD cards in my 300D.

Is this hogwash? Or is there any truth to it?

Without doing some research, myoff-the-cuff answer is "maybe sometimes." Specifically, if you have a SLOW CF card, an XD card with adapter will robably be faster. However if you buy good, fast CF, the transfer speed of the camera interface is the limiting element. It's therefore hard to imagine how an XD with adapter would be faster.
I'd buy CF, and get something rated for fairly high speed (I specifically like the Sandisk Ultra II cards. The Sandisk "extreme" are really no additional benefit.
You may want to check out this site to see what the difference in speed will REALLY be with your camera.

I also use Sandisk Ultra II CF cards and have very good results with them.

theres also the issue of memory controllers. i know that the old smart media cards left the controller on the hardware side whereas the compact flash cards had the controller in the card itself. this allowed the CF cards to scale to any size regardless of the hardware that was using it. SM on the other hand was limited to whatever capacity the hardware was able to read. (if the memory controller in your camera could only read 128MB SM cards, that was it, you were stuck). i would assume that, since the xD contacts are exposed, that it also leaves the memory controller on the device side. have the xD controllers evolved to a more "scalable" architecture? is there a limit with xD? i don't know. anyone?
