Instead of giving people less than 5, would it better to not just vote on that picture?

No. That could really skew the results in favour of the photo you don't care for.

Don't try to understand voting - everyone is differnt and trying to understand it is like trying to define art! Do you like your entry? Do you think it fits the challenge? Did you accomplish what you set out to capture? This is what is important to me. I will never understand the scoring and I will never understand everyones perception of art but that does not matter.
I entered this in the paper challenge...I thought it met the challlenge, I loved it - why because I cannot draw a stick person with a ruler and I have a very limited imagination so for me to draw this guy cut him out and head to a graffiti park and get this image made me very happy! My score was not very good (5 1's and 0 ten's) but I liked my entry, I thought it fit the challenge (looking back there was not enough paper and I was seeing it through my eyes not through the votes who didn't know the story behind the image(and that is the way I like to see my pictures)) and I did capture what I set out to capture. The score in the end didn't matter. Oh and it took me a long time to realize this and sometimes I still slip back into the "WHAT someone gave me a 1!" mindset!

Sit back and enjoy the ride!

you should be happy with that picture. so much so that the score is irrelevant.

Thanks! I am sooo happy with that picture and the score was irrelevant! It makes me smile everything I see it!

awesome comments!!!

It is the critiques that will help me as well since I am a self taught kind of gal.

You will "learn more" by making comments than from those you receive, especially since the comments made during voting are made without the context of knowing your goals, motivations, setting, etc.

By contrast (pun intended) when you can articulate what "works" (or doesn't) for you about someone else's picture, you can do it without the emotional investment you have in your own, and you will then be able to incorporate that knowledge as you plan and execute future images.

There are no mandatory scoring criteria, other than you vote consistently and without bias (e.g. if you know the photographer), and that "better" pictures get higher scores. Like everyone else, you are free to decide for yourself how to score a photo; how much weight to give to meeting the challenge, technical execution, subject, emotiveness, etc....

Now, that right there should make lotsa peeps round here take notice..... 'specially those who've openly admitted to biased voting patterns when they recognise the photographer and/or their style....

I'd be curious to know who has openly admitted that.

(Sorry Susan...) The one that springs to mind immediately is Snaffles, who has openly admitted, time and time again, that she penalises the "PK's" (ie: popular kids) when she recognises their images or faces...

and if you want more, go look yourselves. I've over indulged in scotch tonight. Find your own effigy's to burn.

It's odd to have the popular kids so concerned about the small number of uncool kids who don't like them.

I'm neither. I don't give a shit.
