I had just told my husband last night that some of the top talents on this site were young teens. Believe me, when it comes to being behind a camera, at 48, any advantages I have are balanced or outweighed by the ones a young person might. At any rate, I don't thing learning has an age, just a desire. I feel like an imbecile here, becuase I am so new to photography, but I am quite intelligent the rest of the time. LOL Sincerely, I had thought I am way out of my league (and I am ) here, but most the people here seem to accept us newbies. |

I'm considered a pretty funny person and I don't get the humor in this. It's just confusing. To be fair, I'm not a fan of practical joke humour since there's not much wit involved ---the laugh relies on placing another person in a situation which makes them appear foolish. Not too funny. At any rate, I sure didn't bust a gut. No offense, I just think it's a dumb practical joke without much pay-off.

I love how there is a wide variety of ages here on DPC. There are a TON of wonderful teen photographers here. Personally, I still have a long ways to go.

You will have to start from somewhere. Yes they have 'challenges' here. But if you are trying to improve yourself as a photographer then you are challenging yourself all the time. Each image gets over 200 votes and I am sure that you will be able to learn from a lot of comments and also it would narrow down your choices of what to photograph and make you think about your approach.

I highly recommend reading this Tutorial on Giving and Receiving Feedback.
If you can learn to separate people's opinion about your photo from their opinion of you, you will make possible any amount of improvement as you want to try and accomplish.
If you want to really improve, I think you should try and feel OK about submitting photos you know could be better, for suggestions on how to do so, and to comment on as many other photos as you can. These will really help you see which things "work" and which don't, and why.

Seventeen. Woot Woot! lol
Blue ribbon at 16:
My other bests:

I just started submitting pictures. I got a brown ribbon on my second challenge =) . But through the process, I learned and got better. And eventually got a ribbon (that happened to be blue!). Although my first pictures weren't great, they were something. And although my Avg. Vote recieved is now just below 5, it's getting higher. So, submit some photos, and learn to be a better photographer.

Man, you know what? As a younger folk, you have the benefit of learning at such a younger age and have time....take this time to know and understand this craft...you have time and not having to deal with with taxes, families, jobs...ect...perhaps more than I did nowadays...but, you have opportunities to grow and learn....As a 32 year old, I just NOW found to have time to work on my craft as photographer. I wished that I did many, many years ago...You know, I saved 150 bucks one summer when I was 14 and bought a used Nikon SLR...still have it....I picked that thing up and played around with it learned all the settings and film types and f/stops ect... and thought I want to be a photographer when I grow up. However, life seemed to press me elsewhere and then later in life...I finally picked up that old camera and stared at it and wondered what I have been missing? Hmmm, a Cannon 300D...(smile) Moreover, despite your age there is no better time to learn something you love to do or have found to be a passion that lurked around for many years as I have found...Good to know and hear that you have and interest at a early age....So, really in a nut shell....more you learn and use your camera that you have better you will develop your skills...no matter what age you are...shouldn't feel that you competing with a age group but more on skills and having a eye for a great shot...don't give up and keep experiment new things. Even if it's a dumb flower or sunset!
Oh, perhaps....if you still wanted to compare and share photos of your peers....Start a weblog and invite a few teens from this site and hang out there too....just and idea. But just don't forget to study from the pros from other sites and books and those who have wonderful shots here too....Have fun... |
