Fingal's Cave, as in Mendelssohn's Overture? Penny knows the place.

Yes, this is Staffa, where you can find Fingal's Cave (you can see the cave in the middle, people walking in and out), inspiration for Mendelssohn's Overture. It's also a good place to see the puffins in the summer.
Your turn, Robert. |

WWII Memorial, DC. I haven't actually been there, but it is such a famous spot I've seen it many times. |

I'm calling it a virtual tie. If Scott has one ready, he should go: otherwise he should post here for Dennis to take it away. |

I'll remove the censure if there aren't any guesses, but suspect it'll be easy enough. It's somewhere in USA.
Edit: Bonus points if you can also point out what's happening at the time.

That is the air traffic control tower at Oshkosh, WI. I'd imagine the people are spectators at the Experimental Aircraft Association's annual AirVenture show. |

You got it Scott. I attended the EAA fly-in 8 years in a row. The banner says: "World's busiest control tower". And that week, it is.
You're it! |

Thanks, Are. I've never been but I've heard a lot about that event.
This one might be a bit tricky...

If you had told me that was on the Norwegian coast 20 minutes from my house, I would've believed you. I can't see any landmarks - besides something that looks like a trash can. Any clues? I assume it's saltwater. And I'm thinking perhaps Eastern Seaboard north of NC. |

I'm guessing somewhere in Acadia National Park in Maine, USA. The rocks have a similar look and feel to Cadillac Mountain, and those islands speckling the waters offshore give it an Acadia feel.

Two very good guesses. Big clues: One of our best picnics ever, with smoked salmon and snap peas.
And here is the view from those rocks (forgive the quality... cheap P&S):

well based purely on your picnic I'll guess its somewhere in Nova Scotia.
(But for the islands off shore and the trash can I would have sworn this was a spot along the Tomales Point Trail in Pt. Reyes, north of San Francisco) |

Hmmm... Not Nova Scotia. You'll find this there as well:

I could easily also guessed Sweden. But when you said our guesses with eastern seaboard and Nova Scotia were good, I discounted Europe.
My final answer is Sveaborg outside Helsinki in Finland.

That's it, or Suomenlinna, in Finnish.
I actually meant your first hunch was good, and Larry's Acadia guess was good because it does look exactly like that. Very similar topographically.
Take it away... |

And I've been to Suomenlinna; I didn't recognise the building because I didn't go to that part. (I don't think I stayed there very long because of fear of missing the ferry back <"¤">)
