My camera raw does not work in PS3 so I'm looking for another editing program. I see several use LR would LR be a good replacement for CS3 or does it need to accompany CSx?

LR can stand alone.... I rarely hit PS now and it has a decent but not great catalog/keywording/geotagging system. Most editing can be done there.... but it's certainly NOT a PS replacement.

If you can deal with the Adobe rent thing... They were running specials for $10/mth (until they decide to raise that). Once your in LR you locked in - that has to be a consideration. Otherwise LR is still available as a purchase - at least right now.

If you want LR... you can download and run for a month without buying a key / renting.

Thanks for your input. I have the full version of CS3 but it does not support my 60D raw files. I can convert using a ding converter but I really don't know what that does to the file quality. I watched a video on LR5 and it looked great but I don't see some key features that I like in PS such as cloning. Does LR5 have a cloning tool?

They still have the Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5 for $9.99/mo when you sign up for a year. My fear is they will raise the price at the end of the year after I have become hooked on using both programs.

Even though I have PS3 full version I never have used the advanced features. I did a little dodge and burn and clone out some sore spots on the photo, that's about it. To me LR5 seems to be a nice program and fits into my editing steps. It's on sale from adobe.

Lightroom will open the 60d files and im not sure how it works with cs3, but you can right and open in photoshop where you will get a tiff or psd, your choice. You can download a trial to see for sure.

Thanks Mike. You don't have to have PS to use LR5 do you?

Can't you download latest version of Adobe Camera RAW for free and use it to convert 60D CR2 files to DNG and open in your PS3? Adobe camera raw might even integrate within PS3 but I am not sure.

I downloaded adobe camera raw DNG converter. I have to go to the converter and convert the files from .CS2 to DNG and save them in another folder. When I go to that folder photoshop nor windows seven lets me see the thumbnail image.
So I have two problems. 1) An extra step and having to save an extra file. 2) can't see RAW or DNG thumbnail Pictures in photoshop or windows 7.

Not Mike (obviously) but there is no need for PS if you have LR.... I ran LR for a long time with no PS at all.

1. No "batch convert" option? I thought that existed.
2. See //www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26829 for the codec pack from Microsoft.

ETA: Adobe DNG converter: https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5694

I use LR for 70% of my work and rest is CC (again this is part of that $9.99 deal)

this of course depends on your editing style and subjects. if i was a landscape photog, yes i could probably do without PS, but with portraits and heavy retouching, LR is no way an option. for one PS gives you more leeway and LR gets bogged down with too many edits.

I tried to reproduce an edit i did in PS with LR5 and it was able to do what i needed.

case in point:

original

PS

LR

by the time i was done, LR was just about unusable since it was so slow... from one portrait retouch! I'd love to just use LR since its so much easier and faster but its just not there yet, it would be if they could figure out the slowdown issue.

Maybe Photoshop Elements 12 would suit you ok, it does loads, and you can still buy it outright. When I get fed up paying monthly that's the way I think I will go.

Welcome back, by the way.
