You want cliche'?

Don't miss St. Patrick's Cathedral. Even if you're not a church-goer, the place is just simply a feast for the eyes. I could spend hours in there.

The Staten Island Ferry is a fun free ride. We've gotten on in Manhattan, then just looped back through the turnstiles on the Staten Island side for the return trip.

I would have suggested going to a Yankees game, but they're out of town that week. The Mets are in town. But, they're the Mets. : )

Empire State Building and/or Top of the Rock. (I've never done either, but want to)

We like the Street Fairs that they have every weekend. Sometimes they're tiny, but others are huge (they close of entire sections of main streets and avenues). the 2014 schedule isn't out yet, but check here if you're interested: //nycstreetfairs.com/

And yes would love to see the Statue of liberty, thanks for the info regarding booking ahead!

Just be really sure you need to do that.... You get a great view from the (free) staten island ferry..... grab some food before and sit out on the side deck (and throw on a 70-200 :-) ). To stand near the statue is a big time commitment..... which is fine if you really need to go there. I did it years ago and did the climb to the crown (not sure if that's allowed now days) but it was a huge time sink.

Top of the rock is FAR better than empire IMO.... second level has a flat area to put your camera on so take a table top tripod or bean bag for some late evening shots.... they will sometimes/mostly hassle you about real tripods.

Add the high line to your list.... It's an old elevated train track that is well worth a walk. One end is close to B&H, so you know... accidentally combine things if you cannot justify a special trip to B&H :-)

I refuse to do the 9/11 thing - the whole free but expected contribution for a memorial rubs me the wrong way and the lines & "security" put it over the top for me - but if you do than be prepared to burn a lot of time there. If your in the area anyway, there is a nice little church... I THINK it's call St Pauls maybe that is well worth a 30min spin thru. You will see it trying to find the queue for the 9/11 thing most likely :-)

I agree with others, forget about shopping. It's more expensive than your local mall and has the same sort of stuff anyway.

Walk over the Brooklyn bridge.... that area just off to either side has great city views with the bridge above - maybe check if the bridge is unwrapped as it's been wrapped up for a while. You could grab the subway over or back if you want to cut down on the walking some.

If you into animals, the central park zoo is small but quaint and makes a nice break when walking around the park. Try to get into the north end of the park as there are some nice little areas.

If you have time after the statue boat thing... walk up the west side (Jersey city is opposite). That area is nice now with walkways most of the way and lots of places to grab something to eat along the water.... you can grab a subway back uptown when you've had enough (careful as I think of NYC as a walking town... some will disagree).

Top of the Rock was great -- more affordable, I think, than the Empire State Building ($20/head?). And we booked in advance, so the wait was minimal. The one advantage it has over the Empire State Building is that you can take pictures that actually include the Empire State Building.

I spent hours watching the snow leopards. And the exotic birds are cool, too.

Nice fact checking, actually, it does fluctuate, usually in the top 5 or so. With 36% of the population foreign born, feels like everybody in the world is there...It does have the second most number of skyscrapers(second only to hong kong).

Lot of info thanks everyone. Looks like we have to spend around $400.00 p/n for a decent room, but it could be worth it if we only do it once. My husband has never had a desire to visit NYC, but he figured he might as well get it over and done with. I know I'll love it, especially Central Park, I've always dreamed of going there, would that take a whole day, looks like a lot to see there as well?

And yes would love to see the Statue of liberty, thanks for the info regarding booking ahead!

Thanks LN13 and Mike also. So much to do!

Those rates sound a tad high. I remember staying at the Marriott in Times Square for much less than that. You could check Here for the rates during the time frame of your visit.

Ok great never heard of Kayak before, that's awesome.

Best you familiarize yourself with Kayak, Cheapflights and other similar venues.

I travel somewhere every year and can tell you that there are savings to be made on flights, car rentals and accommodations.

Have fun,

Ray

Kayak is great for flights. Some low-cost carriers don't publish fares there, such as Southwest, so you have to check their sites separately. But Kayak is usually really good. Hotwire is a decent site as well for hotels. Priceline can be good as well, and friends have said it's the best for car rentals.

My daughter's the one who wants to shop, I really couldn't care less. I just want to see the main attractions, the tourist hot spots, cliched or not. I'm open to suggestion.

As a family do you do museums, like long walks In the park, does a boat trip around the island sound appealing? Do you want to visit world financial center?

Yes to all of them!
