The only lens besides the 400MM F2.8 that I only bought once! I always sell lenses I buy and move things around, the 85MM F1.8G is so good, I have never sold one.

I've wanted one for a while but have made repeated excuses to not get it. Seems too good to ignore right now. |

Yes, before I knew about the rebate, I got a notice from CamelCamelCamel on this. So tempting. And I already ordered the Nikon 105 Micro today--best price in a long time. Geesh.
What gets me is I'm not even sure I will stay with SLRs...I've been tempted to move down with mirrorless for the smaller bodies and lenses. Except that I like 24MPixels and the incredible detail it affords.

Damn...I haven't really gotten out to shoot, but I'm super impressed with the 85mm 1.8 that I got. I shot some of my dog indoors and I'm thinking it's up there with the sharpest lenses I've ever used. Plus stunningly creamy OOF areas. I haven't tested corners or anything yet.
The 105 is heavy, and I haven't been quite as amazed with it. I'm a bit disappointed that a F2.8 macro lens is something like F4 or worse when you at macro distances. I know I've read about that before with other lenses, but somehow it didn't register with me when I was buying this. Maybe I'll give it a better test this weekend (on my D7100, since my D600 is in for an oil change).
But WOW WOW WOW on the 85. I wasn't sure I needed one, since I do love the 24-70 F2.8, ....but this is most assuredly a keeper.
I'll post a 1:1 crop of a shot later...anyone else who bought during the sale, let us know how you like the lenses now...and better yet, post some 1:1 crops to show them off! |

I've been either traveling or sick since my 85 arrived, so it's still in the box. I'm hoping to get it out and put it through its paces this weekend.
I agree completely about the weight of the 105. I don't find the variable aperture to be much of a problem, since at those distances, DOF is so narrow that I want to stop down anyway. Image quality on that lens, especially bokeh, is good enough that it makes up for a lot of that lens' shortcomings. I end up using this lens a lot. I had the older 105D, and it was much smaller and lighter, with similar image quality. I think about going backwards once in awhile, but the new one has VR (which is why I got the new one in the first place), and works with the Nikon teleconverters, which comes in handy if I want more working distance or want to get closer than 1:1.

Not bad at all. This is the 85 f/1.8...
Edit: no sharpening applied to either image.
