I'm going down to NYC and plan to visit the mother-ship (i.e. B & H's superstore). Anyone been there personally? How is it set up? Can you play with the toys before buying?

I've been there and the store is enormous and you'll feel like a kid in a candy store. There's so much to it but I will tell you that it gets very very busy, especially later in the day, so my advice to you would be to go in the morning hours. The sales help is very good, but when it's busy it's hard to get anyone help you.
They have great selection on everything...for example, when I was there last year they had two isles of tripods.
Make sure you have a low spending limit on your credit card...it's very easy to walk out of there with bags full of stuff.
Enjoy your trip. |

You will not be disapointed. My trip to B & H was the hilight of my new york trip. I am from Oklahoma, and we only have one (poor) photography store. B&H was not only the coolest store I have ever seen, and yes, you can touch anything (with the assistance of the sales staff) but it also had the craziest system of delivery of the item I have ever seen. All the merchandice is actually in the basement, and you tell them what you want and go to the counter. Your purchase is then delivered to you via a chain -pulley system on the cieling. It is bizarre. Not to mention the fact that only Hessidic (sp) Jews work there. On my trip there, NY was still very jumpy about terrorism and some guy's backpack just started smoking. They cleared the place out, and it turns out that he had an anton bauer video camera battery that was being terminated. Then some guy had a stroke. It was all very exciting.

I was in NYC the end of last month. (Actually for a Meet with another photography site) Do you believe I walked by B&H and Adorama without even going inside?! I knew it would cost me money so restrained myself... lol
Might want to check, but I hear they are closed on Saturdays.
Good luck and let me know what you think!

DOH! They are! i found out the hard way. On my last trip to NY, a visit to B&H was high on my priority list. We arrived in Hoboken late Thursday evening, too late to go. So Friday we set for for the big city. As we get there my daughter spots the Empire State Bldg and says she wants to go up. 3 hours later we emerge, and I say to my wife, that I'm heading off to B&H and will hook up with them a little later. It took me a few minutes to find myself, and finally get to the store. Closed!!! The CLOSE AT 2 or something. So I decide to go back on Saturday. No closed. Open Sunday. But we were leaving at noon and could not get into the city.
So I missed it. Good thing. Probably would have ruined me. LOL!

That sucks, Mario. Sorry to hear that. I did want to go in, but I knew it would be disastrous to my wallet... :-)
Better luck next time, Mario!

Well I'm going in with my girlfriend, she is buying me my 2003 Xmas gift, a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens. Sooo I might buy some other stuff to go with it... ;-) But she might put the brakes on my spending...

I *SO* want to go to their store! I've been buying stuff from them for years and I've never set foot in their store. I just don't really care for NYC enough to get my butt out there. The last time I was in NYC I was a kid. |
