All you owners of this camera, tell me your thoughts on what you like and dislike about the camera. The reason I want to go with it is for several reasons:
1. Budget
2. I already have Sony Memory and am very familiar with Sony
3. 5 MP and 4x Optical Zoom
4. Manual, Shutter, and Aperature Priority
5. Carl Zeiss Lens (Larger than the one I have now by far)

I don't have that camera, but I can tell you from my own experience that 4x zoom is not enough to meet your needs if you are going to shoot "events" (in my case, my children's concerts, but it applies elswehere) or wildlife.

I really don't have any interest in doing indoor events like sports. I am more of a nature photographer so that is no big deal for me. Plus, this camera will outperform the one I have now by a LONG ways, plus I am getting it for free from my parents, so I think it will do me just fine.

I don't have that camera, but I used to have the F707 and when I switched, I opted to step off the Sony road, here's why:

Sony doesn't make a digital SLR, so the sony road eventually becomes a dead end in term of accessories (ie ... external flash, more memory). Any extras you buy won't be useful if you ever want to buy a digital SLR.

Sony external flashes suck.

Sony memory, while getting better, is still more expensive and slower than compact flash.

The Canon G5 got ever so slightly better reviews than the V1 (perhaps this is an opinion, but I did a lot research at the time they both came out). The G5 is compatible with the EOS flash system which is 1 million times better than Sony (by the way, I bought the G5 and wasn't 100% pleased with it, just pointing out other options ... the autofocus stunk, picture quality was great).

Unless you are absolutely positive that you are NEVER going to buy a digital SLR, I'd take this time to switch over to Canon or Nikon. Just my opinion.

I've had the DSC-V1 for almost a year now (I got it the first week it came out).

I love it. It's very compact and durable. The lens is very good, I'm able to get decent macros and it does very well in low light situations (best with a tripod of course). I shot some theatre stuff and it performed very well for posting on the web.

I use it almost exclusively in the JPG mode, the TIFF mode is very slow to write if you're doing 5MP.

The controls are very intuitive for me - I know some folks complain about the up and down lever for the zoom, but it makes more sense for me as a lefty than a back and forth zoom control.

I don't use the manual mode much, but my hubby does and he finds it to be very, very good at capturing his work (he's a lighting designer). Even the video mode is pretty decent (not the sounds so much).

I think the photo quality is pretty good for this prosumer camera - I've really enjoyed the camera. I'm eventually going to get a digital SLR, probably a Nikon to go with our existing lenses for our film SLR.

Anything else you want to know? I don't have an online gallery yet to point you to, but DPReviews did some pretty good testing of it and gave it decent marks.

Hey Matthew, check out $374 for V1 from Dell Home. Check out link for info might be too much trouble, but the money saved you can buy a tele or wide add-on lens.

I think this is an excellent compact camera with a very good lens and a spot-meter!

I'd rather buy the F717 or the F828 instead though, since every time I have bought a good cam I found myself upgrading to a better one. They are, IMO, among the best (quick and intuitive to use and shoot with/very good image quality for a compact/spot-meter/sturdy built/built-in 'quick' charger/great glass etc.) non-DSLRs, unless, of course, you can afford the cost of a Leica.

I have this camera for a year now and I love it. I had plan sooner this year to switch for a DSLR or a 828 but I find my V1 to do pretty much all I want to do. I'm selling Sony camera in a store and the 1st thing you'll feel upgrading from your camera to a V1 will be construction quality. The V1 is much more solid. As for the option, the manual mode will let you set the exposure from 30s to 1/1000s and you'll even be able to get 1/2000s exposure time in aperture mode. Speaking of aperture you'l have a range of f2.8/4.0-f8.0 wich is good. The wider f2.8 is actually larger than the max aperture you'll get with the standard lens that comes with a 300D. As for the metering you'll have multi mode center mode and spot mode wich is better than both the 300D and the 10D. For the focusing in low light condition the V1 have a feature it's the only digital camera to have in it's class, the hologram AF wich use a laser pattern to focus in low light condition such as... Perfect black(!) plus you'll get the capacity to compose a good shot in these so called perfect black condition with nightframing. Speaking of focal lenght, if you add the tele converter you'll get 228mm (35mm equi.) telephoto and if you add the wide converter you'll get 24mm (35mm equiv.) wich is better than the F707, the F717, the F828. These focal lenght will allow you to do pretty much what you want to and if you where to have a DSLR such a focal lenght range will cost you at least a thousand by itself, assuming you're able to find a lens that will give you a 24mm wide on a camera that have a 1.6 crop factor. I think it's a good camera and it would be a good choice even if you had to pay for it.

I've got one that I was using before my rebel, and I was fairly happy with it until I got my rebel.

Now, the only thing that bothers me about it is the speed. It takes a while to write images to your card. The camera has great image quality, and is great to throw in a pocket (a fairly large pocket).

If size wasn't an issue, there certainly are better P&S cameras, but if you want something small, it's tough to beat the quality of the dsc-v1

I'm not a full member, but I had a pretty good photo shoot last night in the neighborhood of some neon signs.

You can check them out here at PhotoBucket. PhotoBucket - Neon
