The American connection was to Eisenhower who was loaned part of the castle for his use during his lifetime. He stayed there several times, if I remember from the exhibition (which was about fifteen years ago, so memory may be incorrect!)

99% sure I know this one, too, although I haven't visited since I was a small child. It was a favourite day out for us children, although it wasn't the house itself that was the appeal.

Just seen the answer below - yep, I was right. The appeal was the safari park that forms part of the estate.
