No to all the after-computerisation crank-calls. hehe
This was used when manual was the only thing available.

When one needed to increase one's "storage space" in today's parlance, one needed the crank. |

Was it to move those sliding racks of file cabinets I've seen in movies of archives? |

No, think accounting transactions being written up, not storing the supporting documentation. Do not get waylaid by the "storage space" I used it to show when the crank would be used, not to describe the items used.
This crank was needed to increase the available space for writing down transactions.
I've always thought that the famous brand of this system sounded outlandishly Australian. |

I'll provide the answer 12 hours from now if you're still stumped at that stage. |

Was it used on one of these adding machines. I believe that the cranks were used to reset the machines, but I could be wrong.
Ray
PS: If by sheer luck I happen to be right, could someone else take my place as I will shortly be packing and leaving Australia for the frozen tundra that is Canada.

Right, here it comes:
It is used to loosen the two bands inside the hardcover ledger, to enable the removing or adding of pages.
The famous make I know of is Kalamazoo.
The ledger looks like this:
The crank goes in on the side where the large arrow is.
And the best[but bad] image of the bound side workings I could find is:
So we would wind it about 20 times anti-clockwise to loosen the bands, add pages, and tighten again clockwise. |

Is it the handle off a hand cranked music box, used while the monkey dances? |
This is a good one, but no.
Used to be used in an accounting office environment. |
This could have been right, according to the general perception of accountants just being busy with monkey-business all the time. hehe.

Part of a hole punch, possibly for paper?
The photo is almost too dark to see the details. |

Too dark, too true. I only saw this morning how dark it is on DPC.
Here's a much lighter one.

We will first have to have a vote on weather newly crowned royalty may partake in this neck of the woods....
but in case all the others want to kowtow in the presence of high-society, the gist of your comment is absolutely correct. |
