Right, the distorted facts are:
- not in use anymore (except maybe in remote areas of India or Outer Mongolia)
- rather smaller than bigger
- crank
- stainless steel
- not for winding up a spring
- not for advancing a reel

and no, not fishing or kitchen related

no, they quickly moved over to press-buttons adding machines, the tills still used a crank, if I remember correctly.

A long time ago they cut small rectangular holes in checks, is this a crank for that.

approximately 7cm from end to end.

used as crank clockwise and anti-clockwise in just about equal measures.

Nope. but for all I know, it could be interchanged with what it was used for.

I imagine the adding machine would not like it if it is cranked backwards - but then again, perhaps it deducted the amounts then? hehe

Typically, this crank would have been inserted, wound some 20 times anticlockwise, something would be done, then the crank would be turned some 20 times clockwise, removed and put away.

Well, we have already tried to guess for about 20 turns, so now we have to do another 20 back to get to the correct answer?
This is an interesting one, because small hand cranks were on so many things years ago.

We used it in our office till about 1988, when we moved the clients onto the 12 inch floppy's. Anybody remember those? I think it had a capacity of 125 000 bytes.

I think the largest floppies I've used are 7". Does that have to do with sorting punch cards?
