Free Software
This is very much like Lightroom. It's free via that link and using the provided serial number. I downloaded it and played with it a bit. I've used Lightroom since 2.0 version and it's very much like it. I'd assume it will also handle your cataloging and raw files.

Following this thread with interest cause I just finally got Mavericks downloaded and upgraded iPhoto but like Katie cannot open my RAWs in PS CS5. And a pm from another member suggests that PS CS 6, which I WAS going to buy, is just as incompetent. So I'll probably have to download the DNG thing or whatever-it-is  MattO is referring to. Like Katie I'm also cranky and set in my ways, I just want things to continue to work like they did before!!!! |

FWIW I can at least open RAWs in iPhoto, and convert them to TIFFS, but then I can't mess with the RAW in PS CS5.

I have the file and can dropbox it to someone, and the code should still work. I have that as well.

I use Preview Extractor - it works on my Windows 7 machine and D7100 NEF files.
Turns out that NEF contains a JPG preview (either that or this program converts almost instantaneously on the fly), so you don't need to shoot RAW+JPG just for this preview purpose.
You just stick your NEF files in a folder, point Preview Extractor at it, and it runs. It's very fast - I've ripped through hundreds of files in less than a minute.

That's been my standard workflow when I go on trips w/my Windows laptop: shoot, load onto my computer, extract preview JPGs, and open the few I want to keep in PS.

| IrfanView also claims to be able to open/preview RAW files (with plug-in), though I don't know whether the plug-in for the latest version is available. |

I forgot to mention - the beauty of Preview Extractor is that you don't need to use any software to view the JPGs - you can very quickly scan through a gazillion JPGs just using Windows' default image viewer.
I open the first one that way, then use the right arrow key to whip through them.
(Yes, I realize Windows Image Viewer is "software," but I'm saying you needn't go through a file->open menu step in some other software repeatedly). |

Just a side note to this discussion, since I haven't seen it posted... remember that the only reason that this is an issue at all is the steadfast refusal of the camera manufacturers to provide information telling a RAW converter how to interpret their files. In fact, they intentionally obfuscate information to foul up third-party converters in a transparent attempt to force the user to use their proprietary software to convert. The folks we should be lobbying for a solution are the ones building our hardware.
