It's a threaded fastener repair insert, most commonly trade-named Heli-Coil.

The little notch where you break off the part used to screw it into the machine was definitely an ID clue.

Yep, that was a big clue... honestly, though, this was one where looking just at the thumbnail almost was more informative than investigation of detail on the part. After I posted it, I looked at the thumb and thought "oh, this is just going to be too easy!"

ETA: Not to worry though, I've got a tougher one in queue!
