I am planning on upgrading my camera this summer. I read all the forum threads regarding the comparison of Nikon D70 vs. Canon cameras. I am still not sure which one to go for. In order of preference, I would put Nikon D70, Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro and Canon EOS 10D. I have a Nikon F601 with Sigma 28 to 70mm lens, I do not know whether I should consider this when looking for my new digital camera. Right now, I have a pocket digital camera - Canon PowerShotS50. I am happy with it, but you cannot take any action or good macro shots with it. I considered the Nikon CoolPix 8700, but its startup delay and shutter release lag is too long for me. Below I listed a few differences between D70 and S2 which I would like to investigate. Any help regarding those issues and their importance would be appreciated.
Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro Vs. Nikon D70
interpolation ( Is it important ?)
S2 has 100-1600 ISO vs only 200-1600 in Nikon
Nikon has Bulb
1/4000 on S2 Nikon 1/8000 - practical difference ?
-3EV to +3EV in 1/2EV exposure compensation-5EV to +5EV in 1/2 or 1/3 EV steps
S2 TIFF ? and RAW vs Nikon RAW
AA (4) + 2xCR123A lithium batteries for S2 vsNikon EN-EL3 Lithium-Ion
Thank you in advance - Art

Canon 10D has a bulb setting too. It's an amazing camera. It uses EF lenses, so you can possibly use some of your lenses if they are EF. The 10D also has very very high ISO speeds too, which can be fun late at night! I am a canon girl, they have excellent products, excellent customer service and great technology. They are always growing. The 10D is a very popular model, so there will be parts and accessories for it for a long time.
I can't speak for the other cameras, never used them. I have a friend that loves her NikonD70. Go to BestBuy and play!!! Or to a local camera shop. You should really hold and press buttons. Also, try: //www.dcresource.com/reviews/cameraList.php
Think about what you will be using the camera for, what you don't need, and what you will regret not having (since these are expensive cameras and you don't want to have to buy another anytime soon).
Good luck!

Not really. Actually it's better not to interpolate, but with Fuji's sensor, I'm not too familiar with it to comment.

Depends on your shooting style, e.g. if you shoot outdoor and need slow shutter speed for waterfalls, the extra stop could be useful.

Depends also, if you shoot long exposures a lot.

I have never gone that fast before, I don't think it is really that practical for most people.

1/3EV steps is always nicer to have as it gives you more control over exposure.

Can't comment on this, no experience.

Personally I hate the two-battery design of the Fuji.
Anyway, I have one more thing to say - if you're going to make a jump to DSLR, do not make your decision based on the camera body alone. Look at both side's range of lenses (Canon, Nikon) as those will be your long term investment. Pick your system first, then choose your camera body.

I had similar dilemma last autumn. I had no legacy lenses to speak of so I could choose whatever I wanted. Both Canon and Nikon have every lens that you would ever need, and Sigma choices as a bonus. You Ccan't go wrong with either. However, the "crop" factor is quite annoying. The most used lenses don't quite fit, or are hideously expensive and heavy. The Canon 24-70mm L becomes equeal to 38-112mm. Not quite wide enough, but still very heavy. In the end I was down to 2 systems/cameras: Fuji S2 and Olympus E-1. I simply love the colours from the S2 and I think Fuji are really on to something with their SuperCCD technology. And Nikon have the DX lenses which actually fit.
In the end I went with the Olympus. First, it is an excellent camera, with beautyful colours and fantastic handling. (The S2 is a bit awkward to use). Secondly, I somewhat agree with Olympus philophsophy, start with a clean slate. Thirdly, I actually get lenses that fit. To cover the 28-105mm (eq) with Canon lensens I would have to buy 2 expensive L zooms. And the Nikon DX's were just way too expensive. The 17-55mm costs $1400 compared to Olympus 14-54mm costs $400!
Still very happy with the E-1. :)
