I finally broke down and downloaded SpyBot to clean out my system, I couldn't beleive that THAT many ads were normal on websites (and I was right -_-). I've have done the reboot process a couple times now and have run into a snag half way through (2985/5--- I think) at the C2.lop process. I tried waiting, but it froze my computer until I Ctrl+Alt+Deleted it and Ended the Task. Finally I had to just cancel that from the actions that it was to do on start-up, has anyone else had this problem?

Yup. It's actually not a problem. You downloaded an older verson. Apparently, the software expects more listings in it's list to cntinue. What appears to be a stop, is actually the program waiting for more listings that don't exist in your version. I had to download an update in order to get mine to continue on and finish.

I have not run into this problem, but Glen's description sounds plausible. The official SpyBot website is //www.safer-networking.org and you can (and should) download the latest version there.

Actually, the version of the application Ami has is probably fine, it's just the definitions that need to be updated. If the search for updates feature doesn't work, just go to the Spybot website that CJ posted and download the definitions upgrade and install it. Normally, the update feature works fine, but since their site got hit by DoS attacks, it's been flakey.

Hmmm... wonder who would launch DoS against Spybot? Probably can't blame that one on curious teenagers with time on their hands.. |

Oh, kay, well I'll go check that out. I just downloaded it on Sunday though, so I thought I had the updated version...perhaps there were patches or something I missed...

Y'all wanna know what's funny? REALLY funny? I can't get into the post I posted before about CWS because someone posted the link to Search & Destroy in there. This seriously isn't fixable without a format. UGH.
Anyways - I'm backing everything up for the inevitable later.
Just thought I'd say that - haha.

you need 2 others besides spy bot to get everything off... also download and run the free version of
"AD AWARE" and "BAZOOKA"... thats the only way I found to get rid of it all.. just be sure to run bazooka last

See ...
they won't RUN.
Period. Any of them.
Not CWShredder.
Not Hijack This.
Not Spybot.
Not Spyhunter.
Adaware ran fine - I updated it and everything. it showed me the "malware" but when it deleted it, I ran it straight again, the same stuff appeared.
When I download a ZIP, it comes up empty. When I download an exe, the page closes. When I burn them on a cd and open them on my computer, the cd doesn't even show any files on it.

can you save to your memory cards if the cd isn't showing up?

Did you try my suggestion of booting to Safe Mode and attempting to run Spybot?

Yeah it didn't work.
The computer won't even let me open spybot in Safe mode - so whatever it is, whatever of the 1000 variants of CWS, it's smart.
*sigh*
*still dreading a reformat*

Tried going into the Registry and searching for the keys and blowing them away?

Yep. Did that. Same thing as adaware - it just put them right back. The actual keys are somehow hidden from sight or given astronomically long numeric names and I don't know which to kill, but everything that said "coolweb" "CWS" "CW" or "outhost.info" died. It still came back.
lol
I did tech support for a few years. I have tried EVERYthing I can think of. |

Try slaving the drive to another and scanning it with the spyware/adware removers. Since you won't be booting to that drive, the tools should work. It beats reformatting.

You gave me an idea, but it's too late tonight to try it. I think I may be able to do something similar to this! We shall see!

Mavrik-
I ran into a similar problem with a hijacker where it took over IE and the spyware removers would not work. I discovered that I needed to plug the hole in the OS that the hijacker was exploiting and then I could finally fix it. Installing all of the latest fixes from Microsoft using the automatic update may solve your problem. |

CWS.Smartkiller is available at //www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=news which is the Spybot site. It's on the bottom.
