I think it is probably to launch something, or to otherwise absorb energy.
The reason I say launch, is because it's pretty clear that there's a 'stop' there. |

yeah, fine... I found a good one - so it's a 5.25 floppy. :D
(possibly an 8", but I doubt that..)
ETA: They really do make an ok ND filter in a pinch - took a picture of the sun with one once, worked well.

Looks like a CAT cable connector die, perhaps the tool to crimp the plug to the cable. |
