Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a way to put my pictures on the internet so people can't steal them. I have some models that want me to use the images online to promote my work, but don't want creeps to be able to save them to their phones and print them off to hang up in their creepy little bedrooms. So far the only protection I have against printing is changing the images size in photoshop to 925 px. on the long side to keep the image very small so if they print the image it will be tiny. Is there a way to stop them from right clicking on the images and saving them. On my web page I was uploading the full size images for great quality, but then realized they can save the images and print them any size they want.

Thank you for the help.

If you put it on the internet it can be stolen. No way around it.

Hey MattO,

Thanks, thats what I figured... I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something I didn't know about.

Does making the image size 925 or 800 on the long side stop them from printing large sized copies though? I read that in some article so thats what I've been doing.. I haven't printed an image to test it out yet though... didn't want to waste the ink.

You can get an "adequate" print at 100 dpi, and if you're looking at the print from 2-3 feet away you could probably get away with less, so your suggested sizes could probably be printed up to about 11x14 or larger ...

I suggest you print the same sample image at several resolutions (or the same file at several sizes) and see what you (or your models) think is the "breaking point" for when the image becomes too distorted for your thieves/potential perverts to bother.

If you find a solution to this universal problem, you will become a millionaire.

But the short answer is: no. If you put it online, it can be "stolen".

The longer answer is: reducing the resolution (vs the size) will make printing the image less desirable, but it can still be snatched and used on blogs, online ads, phones, etc. However, if you make it too small, then it will not look good onnline and you will be defeating the purpose of showcasing your images.

Also, if your image IS stolen, there have been several threads and articles about photographers who make more money legally pursuing copyright infringement of their images than from photography.

Note that this strategy is really only effective if you've registered the image (preferably before the infringment). There's a good discussion about this in this thread:
