Not an insect person but definitely some great shots. How far away were you from them ?

Let me get this straight...you removed your kit lens, turned it around and held it in front of the camera body, and pressed the shutter?

What about exposure and focus?

Sorry to be dense about this but I just don't get it. Maybe I should just try it?

Yup, that's what I did. Go try it. It is fun. Mess with the zoom and stuff too. You can get right up on them or you can back away about 3 inches and still be right on them.

I was between 3 to 1/2 inch away. I got pretty close to that ant. I thought for sure he would climb on the lens. hehehe.

Can also be quite fun to shoot without any lens attached to the camera.

The sharpening is just a mild USM in Photoshop. I am not sure of the exact settings off the top of my head but really with this lens on the Rebel you hardly need any sharpening at all. I have my rebel set to the default settings except for the contrast which is set to ΓΆ€“2. The Sigma 50mm f/2.8 macro EX is really an outstanding performer.

Dadas, why do you set the contrast to -2?

Late last night, I tried this. It worked poretty well. I treid different lenses too, but did not have much light or good subject matter, so nothing to show. I'll give it a try with more care, next time.

Another question: I've read (Jacko, et al) that vthey attach a 50 mm lens to another lens through an front end coupler, and take macros with that. Does any lens work? I have a series of old FD lenses from my AE-1 (50mm 1.8, 28mm, etc). Would these work?

Yep, you can use any old lens. Brand is not an issue because you're not using the autofocus. You have to make sure the lens will be wide open (1.8, 1.4 whatever) otherwise you will have significant vignetting (dark corners).

Quick way to caclulate magnification is to divide the main lens (attached to the camera) by the lens that is reversed. In my case, I have a Sigma 105mm and a 50mm reversed so 105/50 = 2.1 magnification.

This is a shot with my Sigma 105mm (slight cropping):
