I remember reading how someone suggested boiling water before freezing it to get clear ice. (I believe it was related to a picture of fire and ice.) I tried that, and still got cloudy ice. Was there more to that, perhaps boiling it for a longer time? Using distilled water? |

I think the cloudyness is caused by oxygen, but that doesn't help much!
EDIT: From a DYI Site:
How can I get clear ice cubes from my ice maker?
You can't. The cloudiness is caused by entrapped air bubbles. The clear ice cubes you get at a store or a restaurant are rapidly frozen by commercial equipment that traps little or no air. Your relatively slower-freezing residential in-freezer ice maker traps air bubbles in the ice.

I think the other "key ingredient" is distilled water. This is to ensure there are no dissolved minerals. Then you boil it (to eliminate air dissolved in the water). I still don't think this guarantees clear ice though...
Most ice that you see in photography advertising isn't actually ice at all, but rather glass that looks like ice. =]

On a similar topic: Ice cream in advertisements is often mashed potatoes.
It is not legal however here in Canada to use mashed potatoes if the ice cream is the actual advertised item - that would be misrepresentation. |

Speaking of fake ice cream... I always wanted to try it, so I made my "ice cream" for this shot:
from light corn syrup, vegetable shortening and powdered sugar. Very convincing texture and likeness... |

Thanks, everybody. I tried to make a fire and ice shot for opposites, but didn't get it submitted in time to take the place of an earlier submission. I think now that it might be a good thing since I've already seen a few fire and ice on my first page of thumbnails...

I sure could have used this info yesterday! I wanted to shoot Fire & Ice for the opposites challenge (not exactly original), but I didn't leave myself enough time (for good ice or good light). I got a few semi-decent shots, but decided not to enter. Yes, that's real fire on actual ice...

Some pros use glycerene instead of water on their floral shots, it doesn't dry as fast, so you don't have to respray water as much to get that shot. Maybe you could freeze glycerene, but not sure of its flamability though. Van

I'm still looking for that photo where i first heard of boiling the water first--it had a flame on the right, and the water from the ice was moving down to the left. Anyone recall that one? I think it did fairly well in the challenge it was in (top 10 or 20), but I don't know which one it was. |

it was by labuda
and that image went under some major post processing steps - not sure its a good representation of the ice itself

Thanks, Tim. I couldn't find talk about boiling water there, either, so it must have been somewhere else. But it is the shot I was thinking of. |
