You actually want to watch Eurovision ??????
I always try to be otherwise engaged so that I don't have to watch it (more so after the British entry last year) |

| Is this a contest? Sorta "American Idol"-ish or "Star Search"-like? |

Political crap would be a better name for it.
Just watch the voting and you will see what I mean. |

Each country in Europe gets to enter a single/group/band that are non-professional. Each country has a vote (decided by a group in that country, I believe) and can score between 0 and 10 (kind of like DPC!).
It's strange to see the relationships between countries exhibited in consistent high/low votes over the years.
Edit: Changed vote to '0' rather than '1'.

"Abba" were winners, in 1974. Celine Dion won in 1988 for Switzerland.
And that's about all this contest has ever added to the music industry since 1956. I don't recognize anyone else on the list.
Not that I think Abba (with Waterloo) or Celine Dion were/are great.
It is crap, if you think Idols is bad (and in the Netherlands it is, they really cannot sing), well Eurovision is a lot more crappier. You can't understand 50% of the songs, 70% is false, 90% are hideous compositions and 100% just is not fun at all to listen to, let alone watch the 'show' (what show?). I goes on forever and forever.
The voting is even worse. The most fun you can have during that is guessing what crappy song will be used by everyone as an excuse not to give maximum points to the song of countries they don't like.
Go hire a DVD, put on MTV, go to the theatre or even better: just spend your time at DPC!

Eurovision is an amusing farce - the UK got 0 points last year, coz of the pro-US/Iraq war stance (voting is very political), yet can't be demoted from the automatic finalists group coz the UK pays for a large percentage of the show's costs... plus we get to listen to the commentary of Terry Wogan (oldschool Irish radio presenter), who usually ends up making fun of most of the entries!

| I would like to watch Eurovision to see if it's like it was depicted on "Father Ted" the TV series from Ireland! |

A good reason to move to the US. Eurovision song contest is horrible.
