Thor, the Dark World - 8/10
Full of typical special effects, calculated plot twists, dark heroes and even darker villains. Cool art work compliment the credits at the end of the movie. Be sure to sit through the credits to see the extra film clip at the end.
My first thought was 6/10, but I do enjoy Anthony Hopkins (extra point as Odin), and the abs on Chris Hemsworth (must see in 3D) really are worth a 10. ::beams::
However, I'm holding out my 10 for the Hobbit, Desolation of Smaug coming out in a few weeks.

+1, saw it last night. A decent Marvel movie, the 3D was a plus. Tom Hiddleston is a fantastic Loki! I hope there will be more of him in the next movie. 8/10 |

I'd give the movie 6/10
Most of the cast sleepwalks through their parts. Portman and Hopkins are barely there. Rene Russo was strong in a small role which only enforced how flat the rest of the ensemble was, Tom Hiddleston was great, as was Christopher Eccleston under all that make up. But it left me wondering why the bad guys seem to be so much more interesting than the good guys. |

Moulin Rouge - 9/10
My wife was trying to get me to watch this for years, but it never appealed. A friend made me watch it on Friday night... and I absolutely loved it (although the 10 pints of Stella probably influenced) |

White House Down - 7/10
(yes, my sweetie is an action movie guy....)
By the same director who directed The Day After Tomorrow. 7 for being perfectly formulaic and cliche. And yet, quite entertaining. Lot's of clever "recalls" throughout and a little girl hero, yaaaay! |

"Les saveurs du Palais" (Haute Cuisine in English) 7/10 Based on the amazing true story of President Mitterand's personal chef. I love the story and the film overall, but the switching back and forth between the past and future parts of the story was a bit distracting. |

We just watched Part 1 of The Hobbit last night, "An Unexpected Journey". It was with a real sense of desolation that I finally accepted there wasn't gonna be any more on that film, that I had to wait to see Smaug again :-(
I'm SUCH a Tolkien junkie... |

I saw a movie on Netflix last night called " The Lifeguard". It was the story of a disillusioned 29 year female who leaves NY where she is an AP writer. She returns home to find herself, and ends up regressing back into her young adult wild behavior. It is kinda a coming of age movie ( for some of the characters) and a finding yourself movie...or maybe spending a summer with wild abandonment or all three! Be warned---there are a lot of sex scenes in the movie if that is not your thing, but I actually enjoyed it!!! |

Totally worth watching if you like cooking and good food.
They totally changed the central character's name. The real chef's name is Danièle Delpeuch. She has a cookbook, Carnets de cuisine du Périgord à l'Elysee" but it's seemingly only available in French. Should be on my doorstep in a couple of weeks. |

The Purge 7/10
Surprisingly good from a paper thin plot. Gave my wife and I a good scare, having a group of teenagers knock on our door halfway through the movie might have had something to do with that though. |

Sharknado
7/10
It's on Netflix streaming, so it's free. I wouldn't pay to see it. It is absolutely horrible. BUT- If you enjoy things like MST 3000, this is an AWESOME movie to just rip to shreds with your own commentary as you watch. So, really, the movie probably gets a 3 or so, but the potential experience gets a 7 if your'e into that.
It's rife with some of the most hideous cgi and green screen I've seen in a current movie, hilariously poor acting (WTF was Tara Reid doing in this? Didn't know she had become quite so desperate), and an obviously inane plot. |

OMG! OMG! I thought I'd be the only one here who used to mark the Guide to highlight episodes of MST3K! My family thought I was beyond insane... And SHARKNADO! Sheer genius. I'm totally not kidding. I don't think it would be POSSIBLE to top that movie whilst still staying within the general context. I mean, sure, you can make a WORSE movie easily, but could you make a worse movie about climate-change-tornados-dropping-voracious-sharks-on-LA-streets? I mean, they had a BUDGET to work with, this was the real thing. Who PAID for it? Who FINANCED that movie, and why?
For me, the funniest part about it is how the filmmakers changed the topography of the Western Continental Shelf to suit their "vision". Looks like the flats in Cape Cod Bay, it does :-)
Wonderful movie!

Indeed! I even joked with one of my friends about how this movie is an enigma, as it leaves so many honestly ridiculous questions. The fact that it was even created is frankly baffling. It's a movie that I can't quite tell if it takes itself seriously or not. Some movies are obviously self parody, but it's kind of in the middle, if you ask me.
Robert- if you enjoy MST3k, you should look into Rifftrax. Basically, MST3k lives on, except it also includes big blockbuster movies as well as additional horrible B movies. You download an audio track and sync it with the movie and you're ready to go. |

Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Asa Butterfield...okay, my kids talked me into this. Despite the grand special effects and moving story from a famous book, I felt a bit deflated with a flawless hero, and no true dark villain.
Next week's tweenage choice?
Yes, Thor, The Dark World...stay tuned! |
Ender's Game - 8/10, one higher because I loved Orson Scott Card's books, read them as they were published. The movie is really rushed, not much character development or anything... I guess they needed more screen time for the great special effects. Still I think it maintains most of the important feelings from the book and besides it is very pleasant to watch. Different from the SF space saga you might expect.
